Star-Crossed
Star-Crossed | Barbara Dee
Mattie is chosen to play Romeo opposite her crush in the eighth grade production of Shakespeare s most beloved play in this Romeo and Juliet inspired novel from the author of Truth or Dare. Mattie, a star student and passionate reader, is delighted when her English teacher announces the eighth grade will be staging Romeo and Juliet. And she is even more excited when, after a series of events, she finds herself playing Romeo, opposite Gemma Braithwaite s Juliet. Gemma, the new girl at school, is brilliant, pretty, outgoing and, if all that wasn t enough: British. As the cast prepares for opening night, Mattie finds herself growing increasingly attracted to Gemma and confused, since, just days before, she had found herself crushing on a boy named Elijah. Is it possible to have a crush on both boys AND girls? If that wasn t enough to deal with, things backstage at the production are starting to rival any Shakespearean drama! In this sweet and funny look at the complicated nature of middle school romance, Mattie learns how to be the lead player in her own life."

What a great read!

MG novel about an eight-grade production of Romeo and Juliet, during which Mattie really begins to find herself. The play really resonates with her, and she learns a lot about herself - including that she has a crush on Juliet.

Rings true to middle school as I remember the dynamics. Crush romance without going beyond. Very sweet.

-"And the funny thing about noticing: Once you finally so start noticing something, you can't stop. Like how if you suddenly look in the mirror and think, 'Omigod, my earlobes don't match,' the rest of the day all you see are EARLOBES. EARLOBES EVERYWHERE. It wasn't as if people suddenly grew EARLOBES overnight, or you'd mistakenly entered Earlobe World-just that you began noticing earlobes."

Someone stop me; I need help.

Ok, so I'm just over halfway through The Girl in the Tower (I didn't know the third one isn't even out yet!), and it's due in two weeks. I got the bottom three last Friday, so I have just over two weeks. Today I saw The Prince and The Dressmaker on a display and had to grab it...and I've been dying to read Star-Crossed so when I saw it I had to get it.

And I have two weeks to read my book club pick too! Help.

ravenlee Plus, I have so little time to read. I've read about half this month what I did last month, and things are just getting more crazy. I have a serious library problem! 6y

Yay for diverse books?? & kudos to the author for this sweet, positive, groundbreaking novel for middle graders. It's about an 8th grade class putting on a production of Romeo&Juliet and its star student Mattie who wonders about her sexuality when she's attracted to the new girl who plays Juliet. Inspiring messages here for all ages. Plus it left me wanting more "Will" in my life so I'm now serial-reading R&J.?#readharder #lgbtqromance

I'm #currentlyreading Star-Crossed (for real this time!) and if I finish, I'll read the sixth Lola Levine book. That's right, pubs start preparing for Halloween and Thanksgiving now. Soon we'll be seeing winter holiday books on our new books cart.

Anyway, I need to get my borrower count down (hopefully). Read these library books, take pictures, and return them!

I hope everyone is having a good day!

I love, love, love this book! From the second I read the summary to the moment I finished the book, I fell in love with the characters. This book also talks about bisexuality and the confusion of figuring out who you are. The author writes this story in a brilliant way and I highly recommend this read!

Got the #pride🌈 endcap up at work tonight (this is what happens when I get stuck on a register: I make book lists and turn them into displays 😈). There are so many great YA books that it was hard to narrow it down and leave room for other things, too. #goodproblemtohave @bncoralridge

Read for @bookriot #ReadHarder Challenge to read a LGBTQ+ romance. The cuteness of this book is off the charts. I devoured this book over two days and stayed up to finish. Wonderfully written without talking down to the intended young audience. My only complaint is that it ended. I definitely want more. No matter your age, pick this up. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

MemoirsForMe Been trying to find recommendations in this category for #readharder. I will definitely check this out. 👍🏻 8y

Middle grade GLBT novel for the win! I feel like this was extremely well done, and if it was a bit idealistic well we need some idealism every now and then. An important book to have on your shelves. Deals with a first same-sex crush in a middle-school-appropriate way. Yes, please!! #weneeddiversebooks #glbt #hammockreading

I am having all. the. feels. over this book right now. I'm so glad that this book exists in the world. It is sweet and heartfelt and honest and true, and I love it so much. I wish I could go back in time and give it to 13-year-old me. It is wondrously beautiful, and I loved reading it. 😍😭😍

I forgot I'd gotten an e-galley of this. With all the hubbub about it today, I'm finally going to start it. And make sure my library gets a copy of it. For those who don't know what hubbub I'm talking about: http://ow.ly/6lIP30abvQK

I loved this book!! Barbara Dee's characters are smart and complex. I loved that Dee knew that 8th graders can love Shakespeare and that she never puts anyone in a box. I give this book so much love. It hits shelves in March and I have a big feeling about this one, you guys. #middlegrade #kidlit #lgbtlit #shakespeare
