A small community on New Zealand's Tasman Bay is suddenly overwhelmed by a bloodthirsty madness. There are fourteen survivors. Trapped in by a strange force-field called the 'no-go', cut off from the world outside, they must pull together, bury the dead and face their fears. Because whatever caused the insanity is still at large. And it hasn't finished with them yet. Wake is a riveting tour-de-force. A book about extreme events, ordinary people, heroic compassion - and invisible monsters.

Brought this one due to @Reggie and I see @Lindy enjoyed too! Psychological thriller or sci-fi or horror....could be any of those. Good read, similar vibe to Under the Dome.

Lindy 👍Elizabeth Knox is great. 😊 6y
Reggie Ughhhh, the part where the girl realizes that the guy was hoping the other sister was the one who would survive in the body. That broke my heart. Glad you liked it!!! 6y
TrishB @Lindy my first but will have a look at some others! 6y

This was totally a New Zealand Under the Dome and Stinger. And one might think that one would get tired of such a story but Knox makes the story her own. 14 survivors manage to survive a moment of craziness that leaves 500 dead in an area that no one can leave. Knox wrote a few psychological surprises in here that had me turning pages. She also writes about humans. Not so much scary as it was suspenseful, and at times, just lovely. Pick!!!👇🏼

Reggie Things I learned about New Zealand. Upper middle pic is a kakapo which is an endangered species of a nocturnal flightless parrot. Bot left pic for all you scrabble players who don‘t know what to do with that a, i, w, h is a kowhai, and the bot right is a pohutukawa also known as the NZ Christmas tree. Missing from the pics are the Kaimanawa horses which are a pack of feral horses that have to be culled every year as to not endanger the ecosystem. 6y

@ReadingEnvy I had a jacaranda sighting and thought of you, in a book given to me by @Centique . Poor Adele, she died choking on coins force fed to her by a crazy person. I listened to your show yesterday and I really enjoyed the author. Ya‘ll made me laugh. I used to work in a restaurant where all the cooks worshipped Scarface. I had never seen the movie but when I did all I could think was ‘do they know how it ends?‘ Lol.

ReadingEnvy Woah woah jacaranda! I really enjoyed Claire as a guest...I downloaded her first book to try soon. 6y

The opening scene is grim: a collective insanity causes the residents of a small New Zealand town to suddenly kill themselves & each other in unusual ways. The actions of the 14 survivors, trapped in this place, trying to figure out what happened, is what makes this a fascinating book. Psychological horror is not my thing but I trusted Knox based on previous novels & so I pushed through the gruesome start. Loved it. Original & thought-provoking.

Lindy The photo is taken at my sister‘s farm 45 minutes west of Whitehorse. I‘m flying home to Edmonton tomorrow. 7y

“The first person they buried was Adele Haines. Jacob and Bub dug a grave for her under the big jacaranda on the lawn below the spa‘s terrace.”

(Jacaranda spotting for @ReadingEnvy 🌸😁)

I went to a wonderful used bookstore in Auckland: Hard to Find Bookshop. Lots of little rooms; books stacked everywhere. Reminded me of Shakespeare and Company in Paris. https://www.hardtofind.co.nz

Lindy @ClairesReads @LeahBergen @JazzFeathers It would be a great place to have a Litten meet-up. But it isn‘t convenient for most of us, so I guess we shall have to settle for the virtual kind of meet-up. 😐 7y
