Ghost. Ape. Living dead. Young and albino, Chipo has been called many things, but to her mother Zimbabwes most loyal Manchester United supporter she had always been a gift. On the eve of the World Cup, Chipo and her brother flee to Cape Town, hoping for a better life and to share in the excitement of the greatest sporting event ever to take place in Africa. But the Mother Citys infamous Long Street is a dangerous place for an illegal immigrant and an albino. Soon Chipo is caught up in a get-rich-quick scheme organised by her brother and the terrifying Dr Ongani. Exploiting gamblers superstitions about albinism, they plan to make money and get out of the city before rumours of looming xenophobic attacks become a reality. But their scheming has devastating consequences. My workplace held their annual healthcare conference this week, and because I work at the Disneyland of software companies that meant...a baby zebra petting zoo. 🦓 I don't know either. 🤷‍♀️

Velvetfur That's so gorgeous! It's great that they let you touch them, as I met some zebras once but we couldn't touch them, just look, they were dangerous, but they were adults so that might be the difference....or something! I'm happy for you though 😀 6y

This is my third attempt at a book whose title begins with Z - two of my book challenges require such a reading task; I am adamant that I won't double up, i.e., won't count a book for more than one task or challenge; the list of books whose titles start with Z is very, very short; wish me luck!

Lindy It intrigues me that you've decided not to count a book for more than one challenge. Do you make things difficult for yourself outside of your reading life as well? That's a personal question, so please forgive me if it's over the line. 8y

saresmoore I'm trying to avoid doubling up, as well, but I'm also aiming to complete six reading challenges, so I'll probably only succeed at one or the other. 8y

shawnmooney @Lindy I similarly like to challenge myself in the sex department. JOKE! 😂😂 You never have to worry about questions being too personal, but no I tend to be lazy as all get-out in the rest of my life yet do want to challenge myself to the max with these reading challenges. I would personally consider it just lazy and wrong if I used a book for more than one task. 8y

Meg Vandermerwe's debut literary YA focuses on the poverty and danger faced by illegal immigrants in South Africa and the particular horrors saved for those with albinism in a well-crafted novel more concerned with place and character than in providing an event-filled plot.
