We, too, consider machine gun bullets good laxatives for heathens who get constipated with toxic ideas about a country of their own. If the patient dies from the treatment, it was not because the medicine was not good.

People even waste time denouncing their enemies in open warfare for shooting back too hard, or too accurately. There is no attempt to be accurate as to truth, however. The whole idea is to be complimentary to one‘s self and keep alive the dream. The other man‘s side commits gross butcheries. One‘s own side wins smashing victories.
What is the principle of slavery? Only the literal buying and selling of human flesh on the block? That was only an outside symbol. Real slavery is couched in the desire and the efforts of any man or community to live and advance their interests at the expense of the lives and interests of others.
I was sincere for the moment in which I said the things. [...] It was true for the moment, but the next day or the next week, is not that moment. [...] So the great difficulty lies in trying to transpose last night‘s moment to a day which has no knowledge of it. That look, that tender touch, was issued by the mint of the richest of all kingdoms. That same expression of today is utter counterfeit, or at best the wildest of inflation.
The one who makes the idols never worships them, however tenderly he might have molded the clay. You cannot have knowledge and worship at the same time. Mystery is the essence of divinity.
I accept the means at my disposal for working out my destiny. It seems to me that I have been given a mind & will-power for that very purpose. I do not expect God to single me out & grant me advantages over my fellow men. Prayer is for those who need it. Prayer seems to me a cry of weakness, & an attempt to avoid, by trickery, the rules of the game as laid down. I do not choose to admit weakness. I accept the challenge of responsibility.
I was a part before the sun rolled into shape and burst forth in the glory of change. I was, when the earth was hurled out from its fiery rim. I shall return with the earth to Father Sun, and still exist in substance when the sun has lost its fire, and disintegrated in infinity to perhaps become a part of the whirling rubble in space. Why fear? [...] I am one with the infinite and need no other assurance.
3.5/5⭐ Sometimes the author goes on extended tangents into a particular narrow topic that lost me. However, her humor and often biting, unapologetic views make up for it. #bookspinbingo #booked2022
When I saw your post @suvata I recalled the ebook was on sale a few days back and guess what! It‘s still on sale! So I grabbed me a copy! #blameitonlitsy
I devoured this memoir with its humor, warmth and brutal truth. What an amazing woman — a classic to be sure.
First published in 1942 at the height of her popularity, Dust Tracks on a Road is Zora Neale Hurston's candid, funny, bold, and poignant autobiography, an imaginative and exuberant account of her rise from childhood poverty in the rural South to a prominent place among the leading artists and intellectuals of the Harlem Renaissance.
Like the dead-seeming, cold rocks, I have memories within that came out of the material that went to make me.

Zora Neale Hurston isn't assigned school reading,so I read her work this year.Spectacular.Such evocative writing, and fills you with amazement that she was writing about women who wanted to break free from restrictions that still bind them. Her memoir is a perfect companion piece-there's a character clearly similar to TeaCake, and it enhances your appreciation when you realise the real world memories that have been (cont'd)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 Hurston is such a phenomenal writer, brilliant, and just so interesting.

Bit late but the prompts were so thought provoking, I had to post!
1. The lovely moving tagged book.
2. I would love for Janie Starks and Hortense from Small Island to meet- fiercely independent women who know there's more to their lives than their daily routine.
3. Depends on the book and the perspectives!
Here's my July #BookSpin list. I'm still planning to stick to my normal pace of 1-2 books in the month, but looking forward to cheering the bingo-ers on! (And I might put my card together just to see what it looks like...)
I took a firm grip on the only weapon I had — hope — and set my feet. #zoranealehurston
Finally recharged my Kindle yesterday! I decided to get into this classic. It is wonderful!
Catching up at the end of the year, so my sparse reviews are bound to be even sparser (more sparse?). #audiobook #morebooklessbullshit2029
I haven‘t actually read anything by Hurston so I guess I should do that now.
@Wannabe_Quijote thank you for my goodies! @Chelleo Thanks for putting together this swap. I enjoyed it and the anticipation of opening my box and seeing my persons reaction to what I sent. This was my first swap and I am glad I participated. #BlitsyHistoryMonth

Well written, but I kind of regret reading this one. It was witty and amusing, but I learned more than I cared to know about Hurston's politics. Recommended for others to decide for themselves.

Waiting for my son at the dentist office, and came across Zora's description of my home state. With everything going on, fires, shootings, and defamation by trump and Magabullies, it warmed my heart to read of its beauty. #ProudCaliforniac
This rather beat up library copy has a gorgeous cover, don't you think? I was trying to relax and read this earlier, and got to the part of the story where she's working in a barber shop in Washington. Yup. I encountered politics while trying to avoid politics. So I snuck a peak at election results in spite of myself ... I think I may very well sleep soundly to the sound of waves crashing on a beach tonight. 🌊💙🇱🇷 #bluewave
"This is all hear-say. Maybe some of the details of my birth as told me might be a little inaccurate, but it is pretty well established that I really did get born."
First line of the third chapter
"It was right there in the catalogue for us to see. But as long as we had Mr. Sears, Roebuck's catalogue, we had no need for his toilet paper."
HA HA HA HAAA!

1. Tagged, plus one of the two books I still need for #readharder2018 and hopefully a third book
2. I did once years ago, but didn't finish. I will again when I know I will have the time to dedicate to the project. This is not that year. Writing is on the back burner right now.
3. Thanksgiving in all its understated glory
4. Happy November to all.

This book mysteriously appeared last December. No one in my family owns it, nor did they bring it as a gift. A beautiful work of prose that you see in her fiction.
"The thing to do is to grab the broom of anger and drive off the beast of fear."
We went on a date to see Black Panther (it was amazing!!!) and of course we had to stop at the Books a Million. 💕📚
Love this image of her, Latifah could be her doppelgänger. Zora led a fascinating life and died before the age of 70 in 1960. She was fiercely independent and self-driven; literarily remarkable during the Harlem Renaissance. This book published in 1942

These are some of my green books. I'm planning to add one more very important one. I reviewed a library digital copy of it last week. The title is, "Ruth and the Green Book." I thought it would be fitting to mention it here. Take a look ⬇️
It's Zora's Birthday!!! Happy Birthday to my hometown hero. Growing up and walking the same streets she did as a child had a profound affect on my life and identity.
Part of the Harlem Renaissance, pivotal, experimental writing with heart and mind. A most valued writer of our time.
