A Few of the Girls
A Few of the Girls: Stories | Maeve Binchy
54 posts | 17 read | 7 to read
From Maeve Binchys earliest writings to the most recent, her work is filled with wisdom and common sense and also a sharp, often witty voice that is insightful and reaches out to her readers around the world and of all ages. Whether it is one of her best-selling novels or a short story, Maeve shows us that times may have changed, but people often remain the same: they fall in love, sometimes unsuitably; they have hopes and dreams; they have deep, long-standing friends whose secrets are shared; they go on holidays and celebrate new jobs . . . A Few of the Girls is a glorious collection of the very best of her short story writing, stories that were written over the decadessome published in magazines, others for friends as gifts, many for charity benefits. The stories are all filled with the signature warmth and humor that have always been an essential part of Maeves appeal. From the Hardcover edition.

Mehso-so

I usually love Maeve Binchy, but I found this collection of short stories to be full of unlikeable characters and dreadful situations. People who were unkind, jealous, petty, cheating…and very little redemption. There were a few stories that were lovely, but they were outnumbered. I really considered not finishing, which is very rare for me. I‘m glad that I didn‘t give up on it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

This was my #doublespin for January. @TheAromaofBooks

TheAromaofBooks Always sad when a favorite author lets you down :-/ 3y
Elizabeth2 @TheAromaofBooks I talked about this with some friends who also like Binchy. We think these were probably musings or story ideas that she never meant to be published. Her husband/family published them posthumously. 😕 3y
TheAromaofBooks We have been talking about that while reading some of L.M. Montgomery's short story collections. It seems like a lot of those were stories where she was working out plot devices and trying out ideas, because many of the plot points were transferred into her full-length novels. It's interesting to read those types of things, but also it seems almost rude to publish things authors weren't actually planning to publish themselves!! 3y
Elizabeth2 @TheAromaofBooks my thoughts exactly! It makes you wonder, was it done out of love (we love her so much/we love everything she writes, we think the world should have one more book) or out of greed? 3y

Section 4

Question 7 of 7

ljuliel Well I guess it depends on the person . I might be odd but I find visiting a cemetery very peaceful. I think anyplace you go that is quiet without a lot of people around to distract you. I‘m probably a bit odd though. Cemeteries don‘t depress me. We will all end up there someday 5y
EadieB I think visiting a War Cemetery would help put problems into perspective. How bad can your problems be when you realize that at least you will have more days to live while the persons in the graves won't get another day. (edited) 5y

Question 5 of 7

EadieB I think Jim treated Bella badly and I can't even wonder why she would want Jim to come back. I think she would be better off without Jim. 5y
ljuliel It was pretty sad. He was a jerk for doing that to her. I don‘t judge anyone who divorces. Those things happen all the time. I think if you‘re unhappy and want out, be honest. Tell your spouse then leave. Sad that she felt like it was her fault and she needed to fix herself. 5y

Question 4 of 7

EadieB Yes Sandra definitely had a better holiday because she lost her suitcase. She became thankful to all the people who donated clothes to her and made great memories of the items she wore while visiting different places. She never would have made so many new friends wearing her own snobbish clothes. 5y

This is a book of short stories by Maeve Binchy that was compiled by her husband and publisher after her death. I don‘t usually like short stories but I really enjoyed them very much. Looking forward to reading Chestnut Street in March and I would recommend this book to those who love short stories or reading about Ireland.

Question 4 of 7

ljuliel Being honest , loyal , trustworthy. If you tell a close friend something private, you‘d like them to keep it to themselves. Also NONJUDGMENTAL. Don‘t judge your friend if they make a decision you don‘t approve of. In other words, I like my privacy. 5y
EadieB Nothing like having a good caring friend! If you have one, you know how lucky you are. You can call whenever and just pick up the conversation where you left off even if it‘s been a while since you last talked. You know your friend is truly interested in everything you say and you can trust that they have your best interest at heart. 5y

ljuliel I don‘t really think 45 is a number that I noticed much. It all depends on the person, whether they want more adventure or different experiences in their lives at a particular point. Some are happy with routine, others like adventures. 5y

ljuliel I think it‘s best to be honest. Those types of situations are tricky, because sometimes the “messenger” gets shot, so to speak. I‘d think, to be a friend, you‘d be honest with them and see what happens. 5y
EadieB We should tell our friends but they will not always listen and will do whatever they want to anyway. Possibly afterwards they will look back and see that you really did have their best interest at heart. 5y

ljuliel I agree with Eadie. They should have both been more truthful , then they‘d both know what type of person Michael was. I think some ladies just have bad luck in choosing men. If it‘s just petty stuff, then maybe , but if it‘s ongoing big things and not everyone is willing to work on it, it‘d be a disaster. 5y

cobwebmoth That's a really tricky question since we don't get to see how things work out in the future. 5y
EadieB Bernard was not getting the attention he needs under the present circumstance so I think any change would be a good thing at this point. 5y
TheBookHippie I don‘t know 😭😭😭 5y

TheBookHippie It‘s always shocking to me how rude others can be. So insensitive . 5y

Question 5 of 7 - First Section Discussion.

cobwebmoth I think she was right. Then there would be no guessing, or games about where everyone stood. 5y
EadieB I think sometimes children need to be set straight as they can make or break a relationship. They seemed to appreciate what Beth had to say and I think they will respect her more now. 5y
TheBookHippie Forthright! Always best. I think laying it out was wise. 5y
ljuliel I think she needed to say her piece or she would have been miserable and been trampled on. It‘s best to voice your opinion if you‘re in a situation with people you will have to deal with on a routine basis. That way, they know where you stand. 5y
rubyslippersreads I wasn‘t surprised; it was just what they needed. The best parts of this were Beth fantasizing the girls would be run over by heavy machinery, or wondering if she could push a pile of books onto them. 😂 5y

Question 4 of 7 - First Section Discussion.

cobwebmoth I liked Miriam at first. I was disappointed that she didn't really care about her niece's feelings. 5y
EadieB I thought Aunt Miriam was very helpful to Sara and had some wise ideas for Sara but I didn‘t like that she took advantage of Sara in the end. 5y
TheBookHippie I‘m not sure of my feelings for Miriam .. but I do think it may have gone differently 🤷🏽‍♀️ 5y
rubyslippersreads Miriam seemed nice and helpful at first, but I think she enjoyed manipulating people, both in business and emotionally. I was shocked by what a b*tch she turned out to be. 5y
ljuliel I think Miriam had “fun” making decisions for others. She was a bit like a puppet master. I think Sara should have made up her own mind about everything. We all make decisions, some turn out good, others don‘t. We need to learn to stand on our own and not worry about other people‘s opinions so much. 5y

EadieB Aunt Girlie was a handful and for her to stay 6 weeks was a nightmare! 5y
TheBookHippie Gads no 😳😱 the horror! I enjoy many ppl but my house is my sanctuary I dint even allow a night 🤣this is why there are hotels. 5y

cobwebmoth I had never heard that before, but it definitely didn't seem to be a good idea in this case. I didn't think she should have chosen the mirror just because it was valuable. 5y
EadieB Never heard that said before but it proved to be a bad idea. She should have chose something more practical and not because it was worth money. 5y
TheBookHippie All I ever heard is to not have it face a door 🤷🏽‍♀️ other than covering them in death. However -bad idea! 5y
rubyslippersreads I‘ve never heard that, and I remember my grandmother had a mirror over her buffet in the dining room. However, it certainly didn‘t work out in this case. 5y

Question 1 of 7 - First Section Discussion.

cobwebmoth I don't really think that having a child would solve the root issue. Yes, I think it was a good idea for Frank to move on. 5y
EadieB Having another child when you have marital problems can compound the problem as having a new baby around is tension filled. Frank was right to leave. 5y
TheBookHippie Good for Frank to go. A child never helps a problem and I‘ve always felt bad for said child in these situations what a burden to carry. 5y
rubyslippersreads I found the whole thing, especially Frank learning about it from Eoin, very creepy. 5y
ljuliel I‘ve never been in that position, but I think having a baby adds stress to your life at first, as you have to change your schedules, you get less sleep, sometimes one person won‘t help out as much as the other, which causes more trouble. Bad idea if you‘re already struggling. This tiny story had quite the twist. Didn‘t see that coming , but in a way, it showed Frank that not only was HE doing wrong , but he was just a replacement for the last guy 5y

ljuliel I‘ve read the first 5. No connection, other than in the book, they are divided into categories. First one being Friends and Enemies. 8 stories in that section. Are yours divided like that ? 5y
Andrew65 @ljuliel No, just literally one story after another. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 @ljuliel I just got home from babysitting. Doing Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week. Anyway, I have the book with 36 stories. Maybe we can make a list of the stories and name the characters in each story and match them that way. There will be 5 more stories in Andrews kindle and we won‘t be able to do those if we have the book with 36 stories. (edited) 5y
ljuliel I‘m game for whatever you guys figure out. It‘d be really confusing, I think, to read that many short stories and discuss them all at once. Too many characters. 😱. I‘ll leave it up to you guys . Let me know how you want to do it. I never thought this would happen ! Very strange. @EadieB @Andrew65 @cobwebmoth 5y
EadieB @ljuliel @Andrew65 The 5 stories that I don‘t have are: Georgia Hall, Decisions at Sea, Continental Breakfast, Dusty‘s Winter and Funny Little Thing. We can list the stories for each day and then just read those but those that have only 36 stories will not be able to read the ones I listed. 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB I will do a post later of the stories we will start with that we all have for the first discussion. Then will post before each section the stories we are reading for that section. @ljuliel @cobwebmoth @TheBookHippie 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Ok that sounds good! 5y
ljuliel Sounds fine, @andrew65 5y

The #MaeveBinchyBuddyRead starts today. This month we are read one of her collections of short stories, A Few of the Girls.

This is the schedule for when we are discussing each section of the book, with approximately 8 chapters in each section, apart from the last one where there is 9.

EadieB Ok! Thanks for the schedule! 5y
ljuliel Thanks Andrew. Just a quick question : my book table of contents doesn‘t have any of those in the same order. For example, the first 2 you mention are...I don‘t see one at all called Georgia Hall. Custardy Case is page 303. (edited) 5y
ljuliel Afternoon phone in is 137 . Premonitions is 281. 5y
See All 11 Comments
ljuliel Chalk and cheese is 101 , A Result is 319. 5y
ljuliel Canary Valentine is 480 , Big Decisions is 292 5y
ljuliel The last 2 are pages 196 / 186. I don‘t mind reading them out of order if I know which ones will be which weeks. Sorry for the trouble. Apparently the books don‘t match up. 5y
Andrew65 Houston we have a problem! 🤔😳 I haven‘t been able to get hold of a copy of the book so took the order from the Kindle version on the Amazon website. I downloaded the free sample and got the same order. Unless anyone has got any other ideas I can only suggest we read the whole book and discuss at the end. Thoughts? @rubyslippersreads @amiekreger @MellieAntoinette @TheBookHippie @Crewgurl @JacqMac @cobwebmoth @BookBabe @ljuliel @CoffeeNBooks 5y
cobwebmoth I'm fine with whatever everyone wants to do. 5y
TheBookHippie I didn‘t look I downloaded it on my kindle but haven‘t looked at it yet 🤣🤣 I can do whatever ! 5y
rubyslippersreads My ebook doesn‘t match the order either. 5y

ljuliel Hey Andrew , Just a quick question if you see this. If not, it‘s fine. I was wondering if you had the stories broken down into sections, like how many or which ones will be discussed on which days ? I‘m on the 4th one, but thought I‘d see if you knew how many we‘d discuss at a time ? That way I can just read the ones that we will start with. It‘s fine if you don‘t have them divided though. No big deal. 🙂 Thank you (edited) 5y
Andrew65 @ljuliel I‘ve not split it up yet but looking at the page numbers and stories, first split will be the first 8 stories, and then 8 each split and 9 for the final split. (edited) 5y
Andrew65 Discussion for first 8 stories will be on 20th Feb. @ljuliel (edited) 5y
ljuliel Thank you very kindly, you fine young fellow. That‘ll help. 🙂 5y

I‘m not really a fan of #shortstories (I prefer longer novels that allow for greater characterisation, interaction between the characters and more depth in the story) but how could I not read a book of short stories published after the death of one of my favourite authors 😢. I so miss Maeve Binchy‘s effortless way that she told great yarns! Nothing Earth shattering in this book but some interesting stories that I enjoyed.
#ReadingWomenMonth

ephemeralwaltz I feel the same way about short stories! It's not my usual genre. 7y
Andrew65 @ephemeralwaltz They tend to leave me feeling unsatisfied, even when written by my favourite authors. I also feel the same for most novellas. (edited) 7y
Weaponxgirl I actually love short stories now but it really depends on the writer. Some just leave me with a that's it feeling but I love when they capture a moment in time perfectly 7y
EadieB @Andrew65 @ephemeralwaltz @Weaponxgirl I‘ve got to read some Binchy soon! 7y
Andrew65 @EadieB You do - so many great books to look forward to. @ephemeralwaltz @Weaponxgirl (edited) 7y
