1. The tagged book of poems by Joy Harjo made me cry multiple times. First book of poetry to do that. 2. I have no favorite genre. I do love history, poetry, literary fiction and a well-crafted mystery/thriller. 3. Can‘t honestly answer that but my favorite poets right now are Joy Harjo and Tracy Smith. Best thriller/mystery I‘ve read in awhile is Deception at the Diamond D Ranch by G.R. Stahl.

Eggs #1 agree this was a beautiful book 3y

Wow. I‘m not a religious person but I have a spiritual bent. This will be a book of poems that will go into the small stack of go-to poetry books next to my bed stand for regular re-reading. This collection feels so relevant today and some of these poems will be touchstones for me.

I‘ve been reading Joy Harjo. The tagged book and next American Sunrise. I love classics but I‘m most taken these days with more modern poets including Harjo, Terrance Hayes and Traci Smith. And I love the growth in poetry slams that is making poetry lovers of younger generations. #twofortuesday @TheSpineView

”—we are holy with hope.”

Sometimes you come across a line of poetry that just resonates, and lingers through the rest of your day. Or week. This was one of those for me.

Bless the poets, the workers for justice, the dancers of ceremony, the singers of heartache, the visionaries, all makers and carriers of fresh meaning— We will all make it through, despite politics and wars, despite failures and misunderstandings. There is only love.

Crinoline_Laphroaig I really should read her. Especially since she's from Oklahoma. 5y

One of my top five favorite poets, Joy Harjo was recently named US Poet Laurete. A much deserved award, as this book of poems reinforces.

kspenmoll Love her too! 6y

Joy Harjo's poetry incorporates Native American traditions and songs into everyday contemporary life. Here, she also incorporates New Orleans jazz and blues into the mix as she mourns the losses of her people, culture, and country. Beautiful and highly recommended.

I do not want to know this, but my gut knows the language of bloodshed.

That night we headed to the bar
My jones was for the music humping through the door.
No stars yet in the ache of the sky, and
A rat hung in the mouth of the fat cat.
Everyone was there in each burrow of booth, including
Spook and the knot of Indian school brats.
It was the end of the week, the end of the line,
We‘d drink to that or anything else that made us laugh.

Watch your mind. Without training it might run away and leave your heart for the immense human feast set by the thieves of time.
Do not hold regrets.
