A satirical novel about a mother whose life spirals out of control when she's forced to rethink her bleeding heart liberal ideals For idealistic forty-something Karen Kipple, it isn't enough that she works full-time in the non-profit sector, aiding an organization that helps hungry children from disadvantaged homes. She's also determined to live her personal life in accordance with her ideals. This means sending her daughter, Ruby, to an integrated public school in their Brooklyn neighborhood. But when a troubled student from a nearby housing project begins bullying children in Ruby's class, the distant social and economic issues Karen has always claimed to care about so passionately feel uncomfortably close to home. As the situation at school escalates, Karen can't help but wonder whether her do-gooder husband takes himself and his causes more seriously than her work and Ruby's wellbeing. A daring, discussable satire about gentrification and liberal hypocrisy, and a candid take on rich and poor, white and black, CLASS is also a smartly written story that reveals how life as we live it--not as we like to imagine it--often unfolds in gray areas.

Class never runs scared. It is sure-footed and confident in the knowledge that you can meet life head-on and handle whatever comes along. Those who have class have wrestled with their own personal ‘angel‘ and won a victory that marks them thereafter. Class never makes excuses. It takes its lumps and learns from past mistakes. If you have class, you don‘t need much of anything else.

I have absolutely no idea what my star rating for this is. At times I wanted to give it a 2, other times a 3, still other times a 4. A satirical indictment of Brooklyn Momzillas and the hypocrisy of limousine liberals this book frequently made me LOL but just as frequently made me 🙄. If you need to like characters stay FAR AWAY from this one as everyone is horrible.

DivineDiana Well, I do prefer to like my characters, but... this sounds so interesting and for some reason, I already had it stacked! 😳 7y
MicheleinPhilly @DivineDiana Oh it's definitely interesting. I think it would make for a dynamite book club pick as there is a lot of stuff to contemplate. 7y

Mehso-so

I finished reading The Arrangement and decided to try this, since it had a similar vibe. This is more of an examination of one woman's struggle with all the competing voices in her head that govern her behavior and her entire life. It mostly concerns where her child goes to school and the guilt she feels about wanting to change that and the crazy stuff she does to get to that end. It got a little old, but it's a quick read. The writing was eh.

I wanted to like this one, but I just really do not like the main character, Karen. And I don't think I'm in the right head space for all the political, cultural and racial satire right now. Maybe I will pick it up again some day, but I need to put it aside for now.

Megabooks I tend not to like satire period. 😕 8y

OMG!! This pizza was fantastic!

Salami/hot peppers/olives & a stinging nettles/talleggio/prosciutto.

This book is taking me FOREVER to finish. Don't know if it's the book or my reaction to it. It's definitely making me think. And it's been the subject of many conversations I've had with my friends lately.

Parents! Or really anyone:

Public or private school? How do you close the education gap inherent in schools!? It's all SO fucked up.👇🏻

BooksForEmpathy Not lost on me that I am privileged enough to even think about this stuff and feel like I have a "decision" to make. Ugh. Makes me feel sick. 8y
L_auren Public. Just like a difficult-to-navigate real world, kids need to learn to make the best of what they can access and seek opportunities on their own. Privates create a bubble which is pleasant but not representative of the real world (and especially not the people in the real world). Don't listen to negative stories about public, let your kid find their way! Privates are always there as backup as you monitor 8y
bookishkai Not a parent, but attended private all-girls K-6 and public co ed 7-12 (honors/AP, graduated in the top 10 in my class of 400+). More diversity and variety of activities in public, MUCH better academics at private. No guarantee I would have been happy if I'd stayed at private, because I was generally unhappy socially and academically for most of my education until I got to college and took control for myself. 8y

bookishkai @L_auren I sought out my own opportunities in jr high and high school (trips, enrichment classes, pursuing outside of school interests), but for the most part my teachers and school environment didn't support that. Every time I pushed for access to more and diverse educational opportunities, I was met with resistance and encouraged to just accept what I was "allowed" to do because that was how things had always been done in my district. 8y
MrsMalaprop Before I had kids, public. After I had kids, public. However I can see now that, assuming you have the means, you might choose private if that best met the particular needs of your child. NB I'm talking specifically about the Australian school system. 8y
Moray_Reads On a purely philosophical level, always public. But I also totally understand why parents who can send their children to private schools to give them every advantage they can. The fact that there are such patent advantages more open to the wealthy is the problem. (This was really hard to write since private schools are called public schools in the UK 😫) 8y
Notafraidofwords The decision itself is sort of interesting to think about. Some parents don't have a choice. I didn't have a great education until an opportunity came up in high school to be placed in an advanced program. I went to school in an inner city and a lot of the teachers cared and a lot of them didn't. 8y
SaraFair I think its all going to depend on your school systems and your child's abilities..If your child needs extra help, they may do better in private in smaller class size(if the private is highly rated). However if your child does well, they may have more opportunities in a public school. Plus to me it varies with boys and girls. My sons have benefitted greatly and made many varied friends through sports that are not available in private school here. 8y
Cortg That's tough. Had we lived in the state my son was born in, we'd probably be private. Here, we have wonderful schools and my kids thrive in public. I know a lot of people who go private for various reasons. Private schools don't offer as much but if your child needs extra help or you don't want them "slipping through the cracks" it's a good alternative. I worry about inner city schools losing funding if they give charter school options. 8y
Reviewsbylola That looks amazing. 8y
Reviewsbylola Also, as for public v. private, I can obviously only speak from personal experience. We live in a teeny tiny house in order to afford living in one of the best school districts in our state. Most people think we are crazy but I love our schools and our community and as a parent with an autistic child, I know we made the right decision. Our school district has been super easy to work with and I've gotten everything I've asked for as far as services 8y
Johanna414 As someone who works in that setting, I strongly believe in public education. That being said, I also live in a rural community where public education is really the only option... I don't know if I would feel differently if I lived in a community where private schools existed. I'm just thankful to live and work in such a good public school setting! (edited) 8y
MeganAnn Catching up on Litsy posts since I've been so busy at work and I thought I'd add my two cents 🙂 when we bought our house six years ago we looked for houses in the area school districts that were best rated. Axton goes to a public elementary school that is highly rated and he does very well so that works great for us. He's smart and a good learner so I'm sure he will do just fine going forward. 👇🏻 8y
MeganAnn We have a 13 year old nephew who lives in Wisconsin and has struggled in school for years. His parents decided to put him in private school for this school year last fall and it's made a world of difference. He actually likes school, his teachers have been really helpful to get him caught up and he comes home happy and willing to learn instead of upset and feeling like he can't do anything now. 8y

Tonight we had dinner at a restaurant called Alba Ray's and I felt like we were back in New Orleans! It was dark enough, mysterious enough, and decorated just beautifully. We had braised rabbit stew + rabbit sausage and grits + black eyed peas and kale + guanciale mac and cheese + budin balls + the best chicken and pork jambalaya. And, of course, BEIGNETS! With a salted-caramel sauce.

Between the book and my partner, company was 👌🏻.

I know it might not look like much, but this week's burger was SO good from our favorite burger place. Feta yogurt, harissa (what a magical ingredient in anything ✨), and olive tapenade with arugula and pickled onions. YUM!!

I'm 50 pages in and am really LOVING this book. I know it's early and there are mixed reviews, but I think about schools and equal educational opportunity a lot and how to help solve this massive divide. What did you think?

A sharp satire about a well-meaning and entitled white woman who ends up betraying her principles in order to get her only daughter into a better (read whiter and more affluent) neighborhood public school. Yes, I wanted to slap Karen (often), but she does learn --some-- lessons. Overall, an enjoyable, pointed take on white upper-middle-class liberal parenting and its hypocrisies. ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️

The protagonist --white, skinny, affluent, liberal-- judges another mother --black, overweight, poor-- for her choices. This next paragraph is a devastating indictment of her hypocrisy, to which she is blind, but the reader certainly isn't.

Since this fits #orangecovers thought I'd post it today. It's a lovely novel about how well-meaning people don't always do the right thing. For all of their good intentions, they make choices that jeopardize what they've been so adamantly avoiding: bigotry and racism.
