Ghostwalk
Ghostwalk | Rebecca Stott
A Cambridge historian, Elizabeth Vogelsang, is found drowned, clutching a glass prism in her hand. The book she was writing about Isaac Newtons involvement with alchemythe culmination of her lifelong obsession with the seventeenth centuryremains unfinished. When her son, Cameron, asks his former lover, Lydia Brooke, to ghostwrite the missing final chapters of his mothers book, Lydia agrees and moves into Elizabeths housea studio in an orchard where the light moves restlessly across the walls. Soon Lydia discovers that the shadow of violence that has fallen across present-day Cambridge, which escalates to a series of murders, may have its origins in the troubling evidence that Elizabeths research has unearthed. As Lydia becomes ensnared in a dangerous conspiracy that reawakens ghosts of the past, the seventeenth century slowly seeps into the twenty-first, with the city of Cambridge the bridge between them. Filled with evocative descriptions of Cambridge, past and present, Ghostwalk centers around a real historical mystery that Rebecca Stott has uncovered involving Newtons alchemy. In it, time and relationships are entangledthe present with the seventeenth century, and figures from the past with the love-torn twenty-first-century woman who is trying to discover their secrets. A stunningly original display of scholarship and imagination, and a gripping story of desire and obsession, Ghostwalk is a rare debut that will change the way most of us think about scientific innovation, the force of history, and time itself. From the Hardcover edition.

This book is a mixture of history and fiction. It's about Isaac Newton's suspicious circumstances surrounding his appointment as a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1667. I learned about Newton's involvement with glassmaking and alchemy. The book switches back and forth between the present and the 17th century.

EadieB Elizabeth Vogelsang, a Cambridge historian, is writing a book about Newton but she has been found drowned in the Cam River. Her son, Cameron, asks Lydia Brooke to finish his mother's novel. There are some present day murders which may link to happenings from the 17th century. Elizabeth's friend, Dilys Kite, reawakens ghosts from the past in order to solve the mysterious deaths. 3y
EadieB I found this book to be clever and intriguing. The supernatural occult mixed with scientific knowledge was entertaining. The twist at the end was surprising. I enjoyed the author's writing and need to read The Coral Thief, her book about Napoleon. If you like history and the supernatural then you may enjoy Ghostwalk. 3y
LindaLappin had not heard of this, but will look it up, thank you for posting 3y

I‘ve only been on Litsy for about a year, so there are plenty of books I read and loved!

The tagged book is one of them. Others would be Tell the Wolves I‘m Home, Water for Elephants and The Storied Life of AJ Fikry.

#ThrowbackThursday

BookishMe Fikry is my choice too ;D 7y
MidnightBookGirl The summary sounds great! 7y

Mehso-so

It's a nice speculative, historical fiction about Newton. This book gives you a different perspective on Newton, a very different one. The only thing I didn't like about it is the lack of excitement leading to the BIG reveal. Stott just dumped everything in one go and I didn't quite expect it (not in a good way).

#TBRtemptation post 1! Based on a real-life historical mystery. Cambridge historian Elizabeth Vogelsang, dies with a glass prism in your hands and her magnum opus on Isaac Newton's alchemical secrets unfinished. Her son, Cameron, asks his former lover, Lydia, to ghostwrite the final sections. What she uncovers links a series of murders associated with Elizabeth's research. Heavy on the scholarship. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

When I think candy I think chocolate. So for today's #candycolouredcovers I have chosen a Snickers match. (Candy is courtesy of my son's gift bag he brought home tonight from a friend's birthday party at the rodeo. Mmmm... will it last the night?) This book is on my tbr stack and it looks so good. Anyone read it yet? #feistyfeb

Bookzombie Wow! A birthday at the rodeo sounds pretty cool. 8y
Texreader @Bookzombie I've never been to the rodeo here in SA. But I didn't want him to pass this up when he got the invite. He rode rides he'd never ridden before and had a blast. Can you imagine being ten again and doing all that for the first time? I definitely live vicariously through the kiddos. 8y
PatriciaU Loved this book. Read it a couple years ago and now am wondering if she's written more. Must go look! 8y
