Reality Boy | A.S. King
28 posts | 32 read | 21 to read
In this fearless portrayal of a boy on the edge, highly acclaimed Printz Honor author A.S. King explores the desperate reality of a former child "star" struggling to break free of his anger. Gerald Faust started feeling angry even before his mother invited a reality TV crew into his five-year-old life. Twelve years later, he's still haunted by his rage-filled youth--which the entire world got to watch from every imaginable angle--and his anger issues have resulted in violent outbursts, zero friends, and clueless adults dumping him in the special education room at school. No one cares that Gerald has tried to learn to control himself; they're all just waiting for him to snap. And he's starting to feel dangerously close to doing just that...until he chooses to create possibilities for himself that he never knew he deserved.

I think the book Ace of Spades would be very interesting to read because I would be able to relate to it as a teen who is in high school. The book would give me different perspectives on a variety of high school experiences.

I heard someone talking about this book and it sounds really interesting to me, and I want to read it someday because I feel like some of the themes could deeply connect to me and also reveal to me parts of myself I did not know I had before and let me have a deeper relationship to myself in general.

i have not read this book yet but the concept of a boy whose whole life was on a reality show sounds cool to see/read and how he starts to brake stuff because he dislikes the attention and they portray him as a bad kid. i would find it interesting to see how he turns out because of this.

I am inclined to read this book at some point because think that I would find this book interesting. I sounds like a good book and when many people recommend it that just makes it more appealing.

Don‘t you just hate when a book ends? I really want to read more from Gerald. I wonder how he‘s doin‘.

I would not have picked this up on my own, but ended up really enjoying it! This story is about Gerald, who at 5 years old was the star of a reality show, and at almost 17, he‘s still dealing with the aftermath of the show and his very dysfunctional family. He makes some not smart choices, but he‘s trying to get his life together, and I couldn‘t help but root for him. #lmpbc

B.Reader Omg, I remember this amazing and heartbreaking read. Thanks for the reminder—loved this one!! 5y

This is not something I would have picked up on my own, but ended up loving it. There were some parts of it that could have been left out. I felt like the rule # 5 (no touching each other) was a bit much, and gave the impression that young people can be carefree. I also wish they would have delved more into Tasha and why she was the way she was. Maybe a sequal.

I am loving this book so much. Thanks for sharing @Victoriahoperose

I know this may be weird but I find it funny that Gerald took his frustrations out by crapping his pants when he was 5, and biting others when older.
With that being said, I did deal with a 4 year old who had daily accidents, and understand what it is like to clean it up.

Victoriahoperose It was really interesting to see all the reactions to his life and everything. I liked this one too! 5y

I vowed this round to be better about posting reviews for my #LMPBC books because everyone else in my group is so good and I suck! 😳 Better late than never!

I wavered between pick and so so but landed on pick. I was surprised how dark this was for YA and I wish some things were expanded on more. However, I think this had some really interesting commentary on our collective obsession with reality TV (I am certainly guilty of this!)

I liked the premise of this book a lot - kid who‘s family was on a reality show when he was five deals with the after effects still when he is 17. But the main character did not catch my attention that much. And I found his actions worrying, and not well enough dealt with in the book.

Gerald grew up with the glare of forced celebrity on him. His mother sent a letter when he was young to a show that got their family featured in a reality nanny 911 type series. Needless to say, this walks us through his past while he navigates his present. This book is breathtaking.

I really enjoyed this book. Loved the relatable characters, and the unique situations that they're put in. The only "bad" comment I have is that the ending felt rushed and that there were no consequences to their actions.

My book light finally can sit on a shelf in my new place. Welcome to Westlight Way! Sadly I have already filled all available bookshelf space and must put on my thinking cap for the rest of the books I need to move in this week.

#2017Book4
Like everything A.S. King writes, this book was super weird, but also immensely interesting. Every character is unique, not just within the story, but compared to most literature in general. You can't help but want Gerald to succeed, even as you recognize that he's making a lot of dumb choices. This is the type of book you read if you want to get your hands on something totally original.

Robothugs I kept seeing this and looking at it but I wasn't sure about it! I'm going to add it to my TBR! 8y

Gerald is an almost 17 year old who, at the age of 5 was a reality TV show star. Now, he is dealing with the effects of that. Some of those are: anger issues, zero friends and being in the SPED room at school.

I picked this up at the library, not expecting much. I now want to read all of A.S. King's work. I know I'm super late, but it's the perfect example of a #DisfunctionalFamily
