Abbess of Crewe

Funny, sharp and strange little book. Inspired by the Watergate scandal, but can be read as a satire on corruption/abuse of power in general. My third Spark (after The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and The Girls of Slender Means) and probably my least favorite. Any recommendations for which Spark should be my fourth?

The blurb says this is a morality tale where fact can be “swallowed up in the sublimities of myth”. Crewe is England and the blurb writer says “it is certain to bring acute pangs of recognition and knowing laughter to every American”. Written in 1974 - I confess a love for Muriel Spark and this American laughed but the recognition is probably for every nation that strives for their myth to triumph. 4⭐️

Just put down my 'finish in a day' choice and Muriel Spark never fails to dissapoint with her satire of watergate set in the small community of an English abbey. With bugging devices, jesuit priest burglars, + nuns having affairs this bk was a joy + i never fail to smile as I'm led down paths i didn't expect. I cd have picked this for head covering but i have a fine hat waiting.

This short but not so sweet novella was inspired by the Watergate scandal. This is not my favorite Spark, but still very enjoyable. Those who have an interest in Nixson and Watergate might get more out of it then me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
