Free-Range Knitter
Free-Range Knitter: The Yarn Harlot Writes Again | Stephanie Pearl-McPhee
12 posts | 13 read | 1 reading | 6 to read
This paperback edition of Stephanie Pearl-McPhee's popular Free-Range Knitter: The Yarn Harlot Writes Again reminds us of the joy we felt upon first encountering her hilarious and poignant collection of essays surrounding her favorite topics: knitting, knitters, and what happens when you get those two things anywhere near ordinary people. For the 60 million knitters in America, Stephanie Pearl-McPhee (a.k.a. the Yarn Harlot) shares stories of knitting horrors and triumphs, knitting successes and defeats, but, mostly, stories about the human condition that ring true for everyone--especially if you happen to have a rather large amount of yarn in your house. Funny, unique, and gleeful in her obsession, Pearl-McPhee speaks to knitters of all skill levels in this delightful celebration of craft and creativity.

Not much reading today. Driving, knitting, making my first art batt, ending with a family paint (and drinks) night.

Pickpick

Short, humorous writings about human nature as seen through the lens of a knitter. Stephanie Pearl-McPhee, also known as the Yarn Harlot, has a warm, witty style that‘s very engaging. After reading this book, I found myself paying more attention to how I knit, since Pearl-McPhee says no two knitters do it exactly the same way. Check out her blog at http://www.yarnharlot.ca.

RaimeyGallant Interesting! 7y
llwheeler I was baffled and amazed when, cleaning out my mom's basement, we came across a pile of knitted socks, and she knew from a glance they weren't made by her family. Not cause she remembered the socks but because she could tell by the stitches. She could recognize and distinguish her family members' knitting, like handwriting. 7y

Knitting wasn‘t always about creativity and neither was writing; it was about creation, bringing something into being. Making a thing that wasn‘t there before. When I was writing, I was coming up with an idea and then using my skills to make it a reality. Same thing with knitting. [Writing and knitting] fed the same human need, they enriched the soul the same way. They were not an act of creativity, they were a pure act of creation.

I devised a plan. Step one was to have some kids. That was pretty easy. I was able to make them from materials found around the home, although it did take some time.

“Knitting could be a phone line that rings straight into the kitchen of your inner self and says ‘Hello? I just wanted to call and tell you that you‘re wrong about me. I‘m great, and I have the socks to prove it.‘”

“You would think male knitting was Brad Pitt in a thong for how much attention it gets.”

My tea cosy project is complete and I still have lots of yarn, so I will make another, smaller one. I will have matching covers for big and little teapots. (Have to wait until I get back to Canada to be sure they fit.) Thank you @LeahBergen for the pattern. 😘 #knittersoflitsy

“I definitely think about knitting and knitters more than most people, which I guess isn‘t that hard, since I have recently confirmed an ugly truth that explains a great deal: most people aren‘t thinking about knitting or knitters at all.”

saresmoore Impish, yes, but my first thought was adorable! This quote made me smile and then made me wonder how much better our world would be if more people did handicrafts and/or gardening and/or reading with their free time. 7y

I was knitting my way across Ireland with my three sisters all of last week, getting very little reading done. Lots to see, lots of laughter. Now two sisters have gone home and two of us are in Slovakia. I hope to catch up on Litsy now. 😊

There's a certain whiplash in being the parent of a teenager, where you have to find a way not to scream like a berzerker every time the kid slows to the pace of a snail on sedatives, and then ten minutes later you're following them around the house saying, "Hold on a minute. Why are you taking the cordless drill to the park?" or "I know you're excited, but have you considered that this rodeo plan of yours might be a little dangerous?" or ...
