The Dressmaker's Dowry
The Dressmaker's Dowry: A Novel | Meredith Jaeger
9 posts | 7 read | 13 to read
For readers of Lucinda Riley, Sarah Jio, or Susan Meissner, this gripping historical debut novel tells the story of two women: one, an immigrant seamstress who disappears from San Franciscos gritty streets in 1876, and the other, a young woman in present day who must delve into the secrets of her husbands wealthy family only to discover that she and the missing dressmaker might be connected in unexpected ways. An exquisite ring, passed down through generations, connects two women who learn that love is a choice, and forgiveness is the key to freedom... San Francisco: 1876 Immigrant dressmakers Hannelore Schaeffer and Margaret O'Brien struggle to provide food for their siblings, while mending delicate clothing for the city's most affluent ladies. When wealthy Lucas Havensworth enters the shop, Hanna's future is altered forever. With Margaret's encouragement and the power of a borrowed green dress, Hanna dares to see herself as worthy of him. Then Margaret disappears, and Hanna turns to Lucas. Braving the gritty streets of the Barbary Coast and daring to enter the mansions of Nob Hill, Hanna stumbles upon Margarets fate, forcing her to make a devastating decision...one that will echo through the generations. San Francisco: Present Day In her elegant Marina apartment overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge, Sarah Havensworth struggles to complete the novel she quit her job for. Afraid to tell her husband of her writers block, Sarah is also hiding a darker secretone that has haunted her for 14 years. Then a news headline from 1876 sparks inspiration: Missing Dressmakers Believed to be Murdered. Compelled to discover what happened to Hannelore and Margaret, Sarah returns to her roots as a journalist. Will her beautiful heirloom engagement ring uncover a connection to Hanna Schaeffer?

FEATURING: The Dressmaker's Dowry by Meredith Jaeger

From San Francisco 1876 to present day, we learn of the plight of the poor, the privilege of the wealthy, and secrets of a family that connect both eras.

I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy historical fiction, switching back and forth in time, and finding items from from past to present turning up for a mystery that includes a bit of love. 5/5

Not my usual fare and I was more interested in the 1876 portion of the story. But it was a fast and compelling read!

Made to a 2nd bookstore, Books Inc. But didn't get a picture of the outside. We also rushed through because Denard Span (centerfielder for San Francisco Giants) was signing autographs down the street at a coffee shop. #honeymoon #sanfrancisco #bookhaul

"I think the lives of working-class women are often overlooked in history books. I'd like to shed a little light in them." ~ Sarah Havensworth, journalist
"Love, I don't know what you've been through, but I know it ain't pretty. You deserve some happiness..." ~ comment made to Hanna
Isn't it true, all of us have a story to tell? Would you feel cheated if it were never told, because of your upbringing, culture, or social standing, or lack thereof?

This book was an easy fast read & I liked it. The climax of the story kind of surprised me because I guess I just didn't see it coming. But I'm glad the book ended on a happy note.

Mehso-so

There were a lot of things I liked about this book...but the ending felt super rushed and unsatisfying. The tension that had been building was all of a sudden gone, with no real resolution. I also can't figure out the significance of the title at all...I keep flipping through to see if I missed something. #firstreads #goodreads #giveaway

First thoughts: an aspiring author that has crippling panic attacks? It's so relatable it's scary, LOL.

saresmoore Hahaha! I think there's probably a sizeable niche market for books with that type of MC! 8y
