The Violets of March
The Violets of March: A Novel | Sarah Jio
25 posts | 44 read | 17 to read
A heartbroken woman stumbled upon a diary and steps into the life of its anonymous author. In her twenties, Emily Wilson was on top of the world: she had a bestselling novel, a husband plucked from the pages of GQ, and a one-way ticket to happily ever after. Ten years later, the tide has turned on Emily's good fortune. So when her great-aunt Bee invites her to spend the month of March on Bainbridge Island in Washington State, Emily accepts, longing to be healed by the sea. Researching her next book, Emily discovers a red velvet diary, dated 1943, whose contents reveal startling connections to her own life. A mesmerizing debut with an idyllic setting and intriguing dual story line, The Violets of March announces Sarah Jio as a writer to watch. Watch a Video

@Deblovestoread there are definite problems with this, seems like a Lifetime movie of the week, book. However, there came a point when I wanted and needed to know what was going on. And for that alone I give it a pick. Thanks for picking this, Debbie. On it‘s way to you tomorrow @Jerdencon

Cathythoughts The cover is lovely against that background 👌🏻 2y

A broken-hearted woman finds an old diary. Parallel plot lines ensue. I sometimes got confused about which plot line belonged to which set of characters, but it all made sense in the very surprising ending.

It‘s on its way to you, @Reggie ! Hope you enjoy! #LMPBC #GroupS @Jerdencon @Deblovestoread @suvata

This story sucked me right in. Though there are a lot of links that are "too good to be true," it all still works because you want them to be true so badly. I think it is a matter of right story at the right time for me. It was my first from this author, but it won't be my last!

I just couldn't get into it. Probably the family drama and then 'I don't want to talk about' attitude. I had trouble keeping characters in 'Diary' straight in my head. Not author's fault just me. (I should start a Goodreads shelf for that.) Also if I found a Tell All Diary it wouldn't take me days to read it. I'd stay up all night. 💁‍♀️

As a Gardener I can't resist books about Gardening, especially ones with good pun for a title or flowers on covers. I own all of these. Goal is to finish before first day of Summer. 👩‍🌾🌻📚

I binged on this audiobook and finished it in just two days. I really enjoyed it. The main character irked my nerves a slight bit but it didn't take away from the book. I would love to see a follow up book picks up where this one stops. I feel really bad for one character in this book and would like to see amends made for their sake.

Listening to my #audiobook while doing various tasks: cleaning out dresser drawers, the fridge and paying a few bills.

Redwritinghood My family always gets mad at me when I do this because I can‘t hear when they try to talk to me. I think they should just wait and talk to me later! 7y
Chelleo @Redwritinghood yeah, I have to listen at a volume low enough that I can hear someone talking to me. Or sometimes I'll just use one earbud. 7y

On to the next book. #audiobook

Zelma I ended up really liking this book. It wasn‘t perfect but definitely made me want to read more from the author. 7y
DreesReads Is this the book that featured Years of Grace, a Pulitzer winner? I read that one after this one, and I liked it more. It‘s dated, but still relevant. 7y
Chelleo @Zelma thanks for that info! 7y
Chelleo @AudreyMorris not sure but likely since she mentioned jazz early on. I didn't get very far so I'll confirm later. 7y

This is one of those books that I didn't hate, but I know I would probably never recommend it to anyone. Not because it was terrible, but just...meh. The writing I felt was a little amateur, a lot of telling instead of showing, big grand statements that felt out of place. The mystery was a little confusing and a little overwrought. Again, it wasn't awful but it also just wasn't very good on an objective level. 2/5 ⭐

ReadingEnvy Yeah I felt like I was more interested in taking a trip to the place described than the story in the book. 8y
