pickThis HF book shows the hardships of slavery in a way kids can relate to. The theme of this book is perseverance. Addy, a 9 year old lives during the Civil War. She has an older brother named Sam and baby sister named Esther. Her parents love them all very much and want their family to stay together. They are faced with whether to run or stay. This would be best used as IR while learning about slavery.

With about a week left in Women's History Month I was thinking about the books I've read over the years that showcase amazing women. Although fiction, the American Girl books were the best foundation I could hope for. History AND female role models! Addy was my favorite but they were all so great!
