In a crowded two-bedroom apartment in Tokyo, four Japanese twenty-somethings are waiting for their lives to begin. They have come from all over Japan, bringing with them dreams of success and romance, but life isnt exactly going as planned. Kotomi waits by the phone for a boyfriend who never calls, Ryosuke is sleeping with his best friends girlfriend, and Mirais drinking has become a serious problem. Only Naoki, an aspiring filmmaker and the glue that keeps them all together, seems to be on the right track. Meanwhile, their next door neighbors are up to something suspicious, and a mysterious attacker is terrorizing the neighborhood. When a homeless teenager suddenly appears, his arrival sets off a chain of events that will bring to light dark secrets the tenants of Apt. 401 have kept from one anotherand from themselves. Paradefrom Shuichi Yoshida (Japans Stieg Larsson The Wall Street Journal), the wildly popular author of Villainis a shocking story of life in the big city.

Five young people. One Tokyo apartment. A story in which nothing very much happens yet is a fascinating read as the different sections reveal more from each character‘s POV. Not as weird as other recent reads (I'm looking at you, Earthlings) but it has that sense of alienation and detachment that seems to haunt a lot of Japanese fiction I've read.

KittyK Oooh I‘ll add this to my list. Im developing a bit of a penchant for Japanese fiction 4y

Recent #bookhaul from a local foreign language bookstore having a summer sale here in Tokyo. Nakano Thrift wasn't on sale but is #signed woo! 😍 looking forward to reading some comfort books as well as discovering a couple Japanese authors. Plus a punny, artsy French book for babe 🎨🐺#mommyreads #babyreads

@Desha have you heard of this author?? It caught my eye at the bookstore, like saying "pick me! pick me!" and I thought it might be a worthwhile read, especially when I flipped through it and noticed that the story seems to be told from the perspective of each of the characters which is something I really like. Also "Japan's Stieg Larsson"?? That's worth looking in to ????

Mehso-so

This is a difficult book to describe. It's deeply complex with slow, meticulous prose about life in a big city & how you can never truly know everything about a person. One one hand it's exceptionally thought-provoking but on another it's severely paced & slightly anti-climactic. While it works for this book, it's not something everyone can pick up and enjoy, and not something that'll work for other books. #diversereads #diversebooks #japaneselit

Book #2 in the #DiversityDecBingo! So far this is REALLY intriguing. I'm excited to see how the individual lives of all the characters will connect. I have a feeling all hell will break loose as I progress onwards! 😍😆😲

I promise this will be my last Cubs post. But I wanted to share. 5 million people at the parade, & this pic made it on the news! That's me on the bottom left, looking dorky.

Suzze Thrilled for Chicago. I know I'm old, as when I hear about the size of the crowd, my first thought was - where did they all park? How far did they have to walk? 😜 8y
