Pickpick

Delightful, charming, funny, and poignant. A group of misfits form a found family on a farm on Vancouver Island. An eternally optimistic 20-something with back to the land ideals but not much actual knowledge. A grumpy septuagenarian farm hand who turns out to have a family secret. An early 20s kid recovering from a humiliating incident at school and struggling with alcoholism. A quirky, bossy 11-year-old with show chickens and negligent parents.

So this quirky 11-year-old in this book raises fancy breeds of chickens, one of which are "frizzles." I had never heard of them, so I googled. May I recommend googling frizzle chickens because they are hilarious and adorable. Their feathers curl outward from the body instead of lying flat. Here is a baby one.

jdiehr That doesn't even look real! 4y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @jdiehr too cute to be real! 4y

CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @rockpools yep, made my day too. I am seriously considering getting these kinds of chickens if I ever get backyard chickens. 4y

Mehso-so

Just came back from book club discussing this month‘s pick. I wouldn‘t have on my own picked this up but I found it a quick, lighthearted read. My only major gripe was that I found Prudence a bit TOO idealistic.

Prudence leaves NYC for Woefield a farm she inherited hoping for the #greengreengrassofhome but finds 30 acres of scrub land, a banjo playing manager, an agoraphobic neighbor, and 11yr old looking for a home for her prize chicken. Delightfully funny feel good novel. Highly recommend 5⭐

Next up for my IRL book club.

That “charming” blurb had me a little hesitant about this read but (so far) there‘s been enough gross humour, swearing, and cranky characters to keep me thoroughly entertained. 😆

Tamra Sounds fun, anxious for your review. I‘ll stack if you liked it. 6y
Moray_Reads The blurb makes it sound a little twee but your comments suggest it might be worth a read 😂 6y
Lindy I thought this was hilarious, and the sequel is almost as good. 👍 6y

I first learned about the Woefield novels from @CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian when she talked about the sequel on episode 110 of the Reading Envy Podcast. This is set on Vancouver Island (Canada) and features a memorable set of characters trying to sort out life on a run-down farm, and is part of my Alaska/Canada reading goal for 2018.

CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian So glad you liked it! 7y
ReadingEnvy @CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian yay! And I have the second book on my Kindle to take with me. 7y

A particularly fitting #bookanddinner tonight: veggie hash, local eggs, and the Woefield Poultry Collective.

A little #flashbackfriday quote. I read this one for the 2015 Popsugar Reading Challenge's "book based entirely on it's cover". It caught my eye while I was browsing at the library. It was a good read.
