It's interesting that Yuyi Morales uses puppets for the art! But, if you are looking for a biography, look elsewhere.

Interesting illustrations through photography and puppets. There is not much text, which is why I rated it badly, along with the fact it does not tell the reader anything about Frida Kahlo. But, there is Spanish and English on each page, which is cool.
This story would be a great use in art class when divulging into photography and angles. It has beautiful images and could show students how to create work with objects not necessarily paint or pencil. It also has potential to open up a lesson on languages and different cultures specifically Spanish.
Viva Frida written by Yuri Morales won its Caldecott in 2015. This story follows Frida on her journey to express different Spanish words and phrases. The art in this story is so detailed in its photography. The images are different toys and objects that create pictures of the Spanish and English phrases and words.
On the one hand, the illustrations - using a mixed media approach of paintings and puppetry - are amazing. But, unless the reader is very familiar with Frida Kahlo, the brief phrases as the text will not necessarily make sense. I liked the incorporation of English and Spanish with the text, though. #PictureBook #BBRC #LetterV
Love this book as it switches between English & Spanish. Very little text but impactful
This book has some words in spanish so I think it could introduce students some important words in a different language and open student's minds to a different culture. It doesn't have a lot of dialogue but it still brings a really powerful message.
This biographical Caldecott winner tells the story of one of the most famous artists in the world, Frida Kahlo! This biography age appropriately tells her story and the tragedy that inspired her to paint. Students could utilize this book by using a read aloud for the classroom, especially during an important time such as Hispanic Heritage Month. #ucflae3414sp21

Stunning artwork, simple bilingual text and a short author‘s note/biography of Kahlo at the end. Unique and quite beautifully done.
Viva Frida is a stunning picture book (B) about brilliant artist Frida Kahlo, written and illustrated by Yuyi Morales and photographed by Tim O‘Meara. Most of the book consists of simple phrases in both English and Spanish. The end of the book, however, contains the brief biographical account of Kahlo's hardships and triumphs written in more complex English and Spanish. https://www.teachingbooks.net/tb.cgi?tid=41227#Resources

This Pura Belpre award-winning B of Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo would be great for RA. Yuyi Morales tells the story of Frida while leaving out details that may be deemed inappropriate. This picture book would be great for primary students! One UDL & El strategy is: optimize relevance, value, and authenticity (7.2) & 28. Provide biographies of significant men and women from different countries. #UCFLAE3414SP20
This B, PB by Yuyi Morales is perfect to teach children about an influential person in history; Frida Kahlo. This book received the Pura Belpre Award for obvious reasons. Perfect for a RA as it‘s short and fun. It is also written in spanish so it‘s perfect for our ESOL learners. ESOL #28 & #29 work well w/ this book. UDL 9.3 can be implemented as this book is perfect for an ESOL students independent reading as well. #ucflae3414sp20
#LetsTravelJuly Day 7: Frida clearly has an extraordinary #psyche compared to anyone. While it may not technically be accurate to refer to this as a picturebook biography since it is more a celebration of the amazing woman that Frida is – it does contain an Author‘s Note which provides an even further description of Frida Kahlo who was born in a blue house in Mexico in 1907. A great book to have in a classroom with bilingual students or students looking to learn another language.
This book shows a great example of language from a different culture. On each page is 1-4 Spanish words and underneath is translated into English. The illustrations help shows what is being said and creates the meaning of the book. This shows great diversity and the life of Frida. Award: Caldecott Honor Award & Pure Belpré Award; Published: 2014; Illustrator: Yuyi Morales
Viva Frida is a beautifully illustrated B, celebrating the life of Frida Kahlo. It won the Caldecott award for its intricate photography and Kahlo‘s telling story. The compelling pictures and simple and easy to follow language makes this book perfect for an RA.
