On the one hand, the illustrations - using a mixed media approach of paintings and puppetry - are amazing. But, unless the reader is very familiar with Frida Kahlo, the brief phrases as the text will not necessarily make sense. I liked the incorporation of English and Spanish with the text, though. #PictureBook #BBRC #LetterV

This book has some words in spanish so I think it could introduce students some important words in a different language and open student's minds to a different culture. It doesn't have a lot of dialogue but it still brings a really powerful message.

This biographical Caldecott winner tells the story of one of the most famous artists in the world, Frida Kahlo! This biography age appropriately tells her story and the tragedy that inspired her to paint. Students could utilize this book by using a read aloud for the classroom, especially during an important time such as Hispanic Heritage Month. #ucflae3414sp21

Viva Frida is a stunning picture book (B) about brilliant artist Frida Kahlo, written and illustrated by Yuyi Morales and photographed by Tim O‘Meara. Most of the book consists of simple phrases in both English and Spanish. The end of the book, however, contains the brief biographical account of Kahlo's hardships and triumphs written in more complex English and Spanish. https://www.teachingbooks.net/tb.cgi?tid=41227#Resources

nquintus This lushly illustrated book would make a fantastic RA, both for Spanish-speaking ELs and native English speakers. The simple phrases in most of the book would benefit beginner Spanish-speaking EL's, while the bio would help int. and adv. As part of an RA activity, this book meets UDL guideline 2.5: “illustrate through multiple media.” In addition, it is the biography (B) of an international historical figure, which covers ESOL strategy 28. 4y
Ameyer32 What a great way to include diversity in the classroom. Also a great way to bring about interest to art. You ESOL strategy fits in well with this book. 4y
DrSpalding Lushly illustrated… You are so right. Excellent resource and of course this would work well in a social studies classroom learning about historical figures. 4y

This Pura Belpre award-winning B of Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo would be great for RA. Yuyi Morales tells the story of Frida while leaving out details that may be deemed inappropriate. This picture book would be great for primary students! One UDL & El strategy is: optimize relevance, value, and authenticity (7.2) & 28. Provide biographies of significant men and women from different countries. #UCFLAE3414SP20

VictoriaG This is so cool!! Honestly the only place I knew her from was the movie Coco. It would be interesting to learn more about her!! 5y
Ryan_R I‘ve never even heard of this. Victoria said she was mentioned in Coco, but I don‘t remember that! I‘m sure kids would love it though if there‘s any sort of Disney connection! 5y
DrSpalding This is a beautiful award winning picture book biography. Your extension activity resource is fantastic. Elaborate on how you would use this in your future classroom. Victoria‘s comment about the movie Coco is interesting and honestly is what many children may think as well. Introduce historically significant individuals during social studies instruction! 5y

This B, PB by Yuyi Morales is perfect to teach children about an influential person in history; Frida Kahlo. This book received the Pura Belpre Award for obvious reasons. Perfect for a RA as it‘s short and fun. It is also written in spanish so it‘s perfect for our ESOL learners. ESOL #28 & #29 work well w/ this book. UDL 9.3 can be implemented as this book is perfect for an ESOL students independent reading as well. #ucflae3414sp20

Rachelleleduc awesome historical person(s) lesson support website!! :) 5y
DrSpalding Excellent website resource in RIF BUT WRONG LINK...This book is a good one to support social studies instruction. English learner strategy 28 refers to providing biographies and this is an excellent choice for any picture book biography. (edited) 5y

#LetsTravelJuly Day 7: Frida clearly has an extraordinary #psyche compared to anyone. While it may not technically be accurate to refer to this as a picturebook biography since it is more a celebration of the amazing woman that Frida is – it does contain an Author‘s Note which provides an even further description of Frida Kahlo who was born in a blue house in Mexico in 1907. This book shows a great example of language from a different culture. On each page is 1-4 Spanish words and underneath is translated into English. The illustrations help shows what is being said and creates the meaning of the book. This shows great diversity and the life of Frida.
