The One Memory of Flora Banks
The One Memory of Flora Banks | Emily Barr
The most unforgettable book of the year! Memento meets Nicola Yoon's Everything, Everything in this breathtaking page-turner about a girl with no short-term memory and her remarkable journey, against all odds, to find the one boy able to penetrate her fractured mind. Seventeen-year-old Flora Banks has no short-term memory. Her mind resets itself several times a day, and has since the age of ten, when the tumor that was removed from Floras brain took with it her ability to make new memories. That is, until she kisses Drake, her best friend's boyfriend, the night before he leaves town. Miraculously, this one memory breaks through Flora's fractured mind, and sticks. Flora is convinced that Drake is responsible for restoring her memory and making her whole again. So when an encouraging email from Drake suggests she meet him on the other side of the world, Flora knows with certainty that this is the first step toward reclaiming her life. With little more than the words "be brave" inked into her skin, and written reminders of who she is and why her memory is so limited, Flora sets off on an impossible journey to Svalbard, Norwaythe land of the midnight sundetermined to find Drake. But from the moment she arrives in the arctic, nothing is quite as it seems, and Flora must "be brave" if she is ever to learn the truth about herself, and to make it safely home. A remarkable and powerful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spiritand the mindagainst all logic. From the Hardcover edition.

Flora has anterograde amnesia. She is 17 but hasn't been able to form new memories since the age of 10. She writes down everything she needs to remember — in a notebook, on scraps of paper, on her hands. Then she unexpectedly forms a new memory she can hold on to longer than ever.

Bailedbailed

Bailing pretty early on this one. I usually really love books that deal with memory loss/manipulation, but Flora is a teenager with basically the mind of a 10 year old (when she lost her ability to make memories) and kisses her best friend's super recent ex-boyfriend. It just felt too creepy, plus I just re-watched Memento and with working in health care, I need my reading to be my escape. So bail for now... I'm just not feeling it.

I have mixed feelings about this novel. It reminded me of 50 first dates, except Drake is a jerk. It started off strong but parts of the story felt disjointed. The twist was not very surprising. I knew there was more to the story than just amnesia. #YAAPRIL @megnews

Roary47 I had mixed feelings as well for this book. I was really looking forward to it and while I was surprised at the end what really was going on I didn‘t really like that ending. 5y

Loved this book! I can‘t even imagine living her life; forgetting everything from the last 7 years, only being able to hold onto new memories for a couple of hours 😱 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Flora has lost the one thing that keeps her tied to reality. Can you imagine having to relearn where you are and what you‘re doing every two hours?!

MommyOfTwo Makes me think of this book! She was in an accident and wakes up every morning without her memory except what her husband tells her. Then she starts recording herself and things don‘t add up. It was very good. (edited) 5y

A charming little YA book about a girl with amnesia trying to explore the world and find her man. Despite its flaws, the disjointed style of "The One Memory of Flora Banks" makes a heartwarming read which I'm scoring 3 stars.

Flora Banks has no short term memory. Her mind resets every couple of hours. But one right she goes to a party and her best friends boyfriend kisses her and she remembers it. Drake the boyfriend leaves and she has to find him because she believes he is her one true love. To me this book was just okay. I felt like the author went over the same things a lot. I realize it because Flora doesn't have her memory but it got old after a while!

#TBRtemptation post 4! How do you know who to trust when you can't even trust yourself? Flora has anterograde amnesia, she can't remember anything day-to-day. One day she kisses someone she shouldn't, and it's the first time she's remembered anything since she was 10. But the boy's gone. She thinks he's moved to the Arctic. Will he be the key to unlocking her memory if she can find him? #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Flora has no short term memory. Her mind resets itself a few times a day since she was 10 years old. To help remind her of things she writes on her arms and in a notebook. Then one night she remembers one new memory.

This story was very repetitive for several chapters because Flora can‘t remember a lot of things. After that the story really picks up and the story starts to unravel. The last half of the book is intense and amazing.

I have very mixed feelings. On one hand... it deals with a lot of important things (how disabled people are mistreated, how it's important to have your own freedom and how overprotecting someone is bad), but on the other hand, an amnesia narrartive is very repetitive and it's hard to get into at first. But all in all, if you like YA, I'd say definitely pick this book, because it's got a lot of important stuff to say.

Couldn't decide whether to give it 2 or 3 stars, I just really wasn't sure how I felt about this whole book. I felt like it could have been so much better and I didn't like drake or floras parents.

Omg! This book is so much better than Everything, Everything. I had so many issues with that story and this is just a better less eyerolling one!

I was concerned I might be annoyed by the repetitiveness but not at all. It's heartbreaking and kind of funny and there's adventure and some sweetness. Flora, her brother and her travels were so wonderful to read about. It really touches on unnecessary medicating, long term PTSD and broken families.

Another Goodreads win for me. This books isn't bad, very repeative, because you are reading of a girl of 17 who doesn't remember anything and has to write on her arm or place post it notes everywhere. She eventually goes on a mission by herself to find a guy she calls her boyfriend in the south pole. Not bad but not the greatest read

I must say it was a very interesting read but it broke my heart when Drake took advantage of Flora. Then to only realize the last eight years of your life you been living a lie. Flora was definitely a brave teen & give her much respect for taking that chance. The book intrigued me due to Flora having amnesia...Just to live a life like Flora is definitely scary & you never know what way your life will turn. BE BRAVE

I listened to The One Memory of Flora Banks and while I found it interesting, I also found it a bit tedious at times. 17 yr old Flora has amnesia and her memory only lasts for a few hours, so every time Flora learns of her condition, we read it too. She can remember before she got sick, but nothing new, until something happens that she can hold onto. Now Flora will do anything to chase that memory and I found myself cheering her on.

I have SUCH mixed feelings about this book. It's certainly prettily written and the story is interesting, but the plot, characters and many other little things are so utterly frustrating! It follows the sort of a girl with anterograde amnesia which makes her forget most things within a couple of hours - but then she kisses a boy on a beach and suddenly her memory is on the mend. ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 because I just can't make a decision on my feelings!

BookishMouse It's a beautiful photo though! 7y

If you look critically, this story actually has a plot that isn‘t all that credible and even has a hint of a love triangle. I‘m normally not a big fan of either, but in this case I didn't care thanks to the lovely writing and more importantly: Flora Banks. Flora is basically what makes this story! I love how she is able to overcome her anterograde amnesia and do all the things she does.

5/5 stars

The unreliable narrator with memory loss reminded me of The Girl with the Wrong Name and We Were Liars, but this wasn't as gripping or as dramatic as those books. Some interesting twists towards the end but nothing truly shocking. It's kind of a slow build. Loved Jacob and the lovely folks Flora met in the Arctic. Reminded me of my travels to Iceland & Scandinavia. #ya #bookclub

Was looking for light, so I picked up a YA with a high rating on Litsy. Had a hangover from the wonderful Eleanor Oliphant, so the next book may not have stood a chance anyway. Needed to skim this one, which I hate to do. And DNF is rarely an option for me.

saresmoore You are so loyal! I get a twisted sort of exhilaration from a well-placed DNF. 😈 8y
Suet624 @saresmoore you're funny. That little devil face. I figure someone spent a good deal of time writing a book and I just want to see where they go with it. I want to respect their effort. Often I'm rewarded at the end and with this book in particular that was the case. The last 10 short chapters brought the book up from a pan to a so-so. 8y
saresmoore @Suet624 That's a very good point. On the flip side, I think that's part of the reason I'm afraid to write something longer than a short story. I don't ever want to subject someone to the frustration of reading something they don't love! I'm glad this one was redeemed for you, though. 8y
