97 Orchard: An Edible History of Five Immigrant Families in One New York Tenement | Jane Ziegelman
4 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 9 to read
Social history is, most elementally, food history. Jane Ziegelman had the great idea to zero in on one Lower East Side tenement building, and through it she has crafted a unique and aromatic narrative of New Yorks immigrant culture: with bread in the oven, steam rising from pots, and the family gathering round. Russell Shorto, author of The Island at the Center of the World 97 Orchard is a richly detailed investigation of the lives and culinary habitsshopping, cooking, and eatingof five families of various ethnicities living at the turn of the twentieth century in one tenement on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. With 40 recipes included, 97 Orchard is perfect for fans of Rachel Rays Hometown Eats; anyone interested in the history of how immigrant food became American food; and foodies of every stripe.

Reviewed for my virtual foodie book club. If you have an interest in history & food history, this look at a New York Tenement (now a museum) & 5 immigrant groups: Germans, Irish, German-Jews, Russian-Lithuanian Jews & Italians who settled there & the food culture they brought with them is interesting & absorbing. There are recipes & family stories intertwined. Link to the Lentil & Sausage Soup from the book I adapted (& made vegan) ⬇️in comments.

DebinHawaii I will eventually update my review there too, but here is a link to the recipe: http://kahakaikitchen.blogspot.com/2021/07/vegan-lentil-sausage-soup-hiding-soup... 3y

The finished Lentil Soup & the book that the recipe is from. I used vegan sausage & made a few other tweaks but left the recipe mostly the same. Hearty & good—it tastes better than it looks. I‘m only about 2/3 through the books so I‘ll be finishing it up this week for my book club.

A #culinary quote from one of my current reads that I am finishing up for virtual foodie book club this month:

“…native-born Americans, wary of foreigners and their strange eating habits, pushed aside their culinary (and other) prejudices to sample these novel foods and eventually claim them as their own.”

The Lower East Side Tenement Museum is a great museum to visit in New York City and they have an amazing book selection in their gift shop. These are just a couple of titles I've picked up the times I've visited.
