Sweeney Todd: The String of Pearls (Revised)
Sweeney Todd: The String of Pearls (Revised) | James Malcolm Rymer
9 posts | 8 read | 15 to read
Fully revised Second Edition. With a new Introduction and Bibliography by Dick Collins. The exploits of Sweeney Todd, ‘The Demon Barber of Fleet Street’, have been recounted many times in plays, films and musicals, but the origins of the character largely were forgotten for many years. The String of Pearls - the original tale of Sweeney Todd, a classic of British horror - was first published as a weekly serial in 1846-7 by Edward Lloyd, the King of the Penny Dreadfuls. One of the earliest detective stories, it became an important source for Bram Stoker's Dracula, but it was after over 150 years of obscurity that it appeared first in book form in the Wordsworth edition published in 2005. The one great mystery that has surrounded the book is who the author was - or was it possibly the work of more than one man? In his new introduction to this fully revised second edition, Dick Collins, by means of detailed research of contemporary records, has established finally the identity of the creator of this legendary figure. So here is the original story of the terrifying owner of that famous London barber-shop, and the secret recipe for Mrs Lovett's delicious pies…

🥧 4/5 pies for the original tale of the demon barber. It was published as a series of penny dreadfuls in 1846-7.Only 4 characters are the same-Mr. Todd, Mrs. Lovett, Tobias, & Johanna.Johanna is not Todds daughter, hes not seeking revenge.Even though it is so different from what we know (the play & film) i really enjoyed it. It felt like an entirely different story and I had no idea how it was going to unfold. film/play stray so much from the OG.

I love this story! I never knew there was so much history in it. This copy actually has the story of how it was narrative under the original title of The String of Pearls that appeared in The People's Periodical and Family Library in 1846 and became a phenomenon in Britain. This copy is also written in the original text of the narrative. So much history in books ❤️

So I was about to start The Hatching by Ezekiel Boone when I noticed that I had Sweeney Todd in my stack for October. This is no bueno considering I'm the team captain for #TeamStoker and this is considered a slasher book 😲 so I decided to switch them! Sweeney Todd is now in the lineup for #24B4Monday 🍻👻🎉

BeansPage @kymmiesreads hello again sweetheart 👋😁 this is a weekend readathon that takes place every last weekend of the month. The overall goal is to hit 24 hours of reading time within the span of Thursday at midnight until Sunday at midnight. But I got to say, the main goal is just to read and have fun. We all set our own goals for ourselves and no goal is too small ❤️ 5y
Bookwormjillk I‘m doing the readathon vs scareathlon juggling thing too. Great first day! 5y
