5 Stars • "Billy Liar" by Keith Waterhouse is a humorous yet poignant novel set in the fictional town of Stradhoughton, Yorkshire, in the 1960s. The story revolves around Billy Fisher, a 19-year-old working-class youth who finds his life dull and unfulfilling. He escapes reality through elaborate lies and fantasies about a fictional country called Ambrosia. Trapped by his boring job and overbearing parents, ⬇️

suvata Billy struggles with the consequences of his lies and must decide whether to continue living in his fantasy world or face the realities of his life.

The use of first person narration made the character feel relatable while Billy was the worst - a chronic liar who attempted to drug his finance and coerce her into sex, while leading on two other women. My anxiety went through the roof as his lies unravelled. I was rooting for him to leave it all behind and start afresh, even though nothing waited him in London. The horribly deprssing ending held a moral, the consequences must be faced.

Day 27 - #liar #anewchapter

This was a very entertaining and interesting book. The lesson learned from this book is: You can tell all the lies you want but in the end, you are only deceiving yourself. It is a cynical portrait of society but you can't but help like the well-developed characters in Billy Liar. Read this book for a very entertaining read.

Soon the whole incident had passed into history, to be exhumed and dissected soon, but not now.

#MayLovesClassics #Character
I love 60's kitchen sink stories and Billy Liar is a classic hero who imagines characters to escape his mundane life.

Leftcoastzen I remember reading and liking it. Don‘t remember the details though.😁 7y

Kalalalatja Great article! Although, I do love flowers on covers, it will be especially nice to see some more minimalist covers 🤞 7y

I didn't like this as much as I hoped. The comparison to Lucky Jim, which I liked a lot, was promising. But I've read Lucky Jim in high school, maybe I am just getting too old to like this kind of funny meant novels. I didn't really have to laugh, and I didn't really get nervous by the mess Billy makes of his life with all his lies.

One of my favourite genres is 50's/60's British kitchen sink drama- this is a classic story of desire to escape a small town and spawned a classic film scene of tom courtenay and Julie christie on a train platform.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Seen the movie! Didn't know this was a book! 8y
Cinfhen Looks like a favorite copy 💚📚💙new to me book title.... 8y
andrew61 @TobeyTheScavengerMonk i think there is a sequel as well. Its definitely worth reading. 8y
andrew61 @Cinfhen it's certainly of an era but a good read and film. I think the best analogy might be Walter mitty but definitely grittier. 8y
