Good Clean Fun
Good Clean Fun: Misadventures in Sawdust at Offerman Woodshop | Nick Offerman
11 posts | 11 read | 37 to read
After two New York Times bestsellers, Nick Offerman returns with the subject for which he's known besthis incredible real-life woodshop. Nestled among the glitz and glitter of Tinseltown is a testament to American elbow grease and an honest-to-god hard days work: Offerman Woodshop. Captained by hirsute woodworker, actor, comedian, and writer Nick Offerman, the shop produces not only fine handcrafted furniture, but also fun stuffkazoos, baseball bats, ukuleles, mustache combs, even cedar-strip canoes. Now Nick and his ragtag crew of champions want to share their experience of working at the Woodshop, tell you all about their passion for the discipline of woodworking, and teach you how to make a handful of their most popular projects along the way. This book takes readers behind the scenes of the woodshop, both inspiring and teaching them to make their own projects and besotting them with the infectious spirit behind the shop and its complement of dusty wood-elves. In these pages you will find a variety of projects for every skill level, with personal, easy-to-follow instructions by the OWS woodworkers themselves; and, whats more, this tutelage is augmented by mouth-watering color photos (Nick calls it "wood porn"). You will also find writings by Nick, offering recipes for both comestibles and mirth, humorous essays, odes to his own woodworking heroes, insights into the ethos of woodworking in modern America, and other assorted tomfoolery. Whether youve been working in your own shop for years, or if holding this stack of compressed wood pulp is as close as youve ever come to milling lumber, or even if you just love Nick Offermans brand of bucolic yet worldly wisdom, youll find Good Clean Fun full of useful, illuminating, and entertaining information. From the Hardcover edition.

I made some honeycomb shelves recently and when I posted my handiwork, I was stunned by the amount of people who asked to place orders. So my little DIY project has turned into a side hustle the past couple weeks! I'm thankful for extra income and also for projects to occupy my mind in the midst of the dumpster fire otherwise known as 2020.

ElizaMarie They are super cute! Thats awesome that it turned into a bit of a side hustle! 4y

It's bedtime here in the UK and cheating here again with the "book", buuuut.... Thoroughly enjoyed "Bedtime Stories for Cynics" for anyone who has Audible. The narration by Nick Offerman is perfect.

Literary_Siren Just picked it up. It‘s free! 6y
Macavity Yep, as long as you are an audible subscriber all of the originals are free. Haven't figured out what else is good yet! 6y

Ron Swanson is as inextricably tied to Nick Offerman as a character can be, but in this book about various adventures in Offerman‘s wood working shop, you‘ll love both men even more.

While Nick Offerman is a delightful narrator, after 1 hour and 36 minutes, I've come to find that this book will make an excellent Christmas gift for my dad. I've gotten an education in woodworking and shop tools that Bob Villa and Norm would be proud of. I bailed on this purely based on subject matter and not at all because of Offerman's writing or narration. It's a book for a hobbyist, definitely dry material.

Oh my GOD, this guy... I'd listen to him read a phone book! As it is, I'm listening to him say words like "ribald", "tomfoolery", "bookery" and stuff like that. ?

I am not the least bit interested in pursuing woodworking as a hobby. However, I do love Nick Offerman deeply, so this was a required listen. It‘s fun to hear someone talk about their passion, and when that someone is also smart, contemplative, hilarious (in both writing and narration), charming, and adorable, it‘s that much more fun. Plus I love his philosophy that we should all be makers, whether we can do so professionally or not.

Christine (And there is a full-on woodworking song medley at the end, lyrics by Nick Offerman and performed by Jeff Tweedy and his son! 😂❤) 8y
Books_Wine_Repeat He's so funny! I love him and his silly laugh. ❤❤ 8y

Loving this book so far, as I am a big fan of making things with your hands.
Also, I really appreciate it that the author does everything possible to aknowledge women in woodworking, lumber industry and other physical trades. When talking about learning from one's badass ancestors, he is as quick to use a grandmother as a grandfather, and tries to keep as away from male default as possible

If you aren‘t familiar with Nick Offerman‘s work, read this book immediately. And then go back and read his other books and watch his shows. He‘s a renaissance man with the facial hair to back him up. With a focus on his woodworking shop, its crew, and their shenanigans, this book—which is full of cartoons, humor, and well-told tales—will guide you through projects, welcoming you into the hands-on maker community. - Rachel
