12 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
A beautiful, comprehensive volume of Dylan s lyrics, from the beginning of his career through the present day with the songwriter s edits to dozens of songs, appearing here for the first time. Bob Dylan is one of the most important songwriters of our time, responsible for modern classics such as Like a Rolling Stone, Mr. Tambourine Man, and The Times They Are a-Changin . The Lyrics is a comprehensive and definitive collection of Dylan s most recent writing as well as the early works that are such an essential part of the canon. Well known for changing the lyrics to even his best-loved songs, Dylan has edited dozens of songs for this volume, making The Lyrics a must-read for everyone from fanatics to casual fans."

Lyrics: 1961-2012 | Bob Dylan

Oh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, where have you been, my darling young one?
I‘ve stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I‘ve walked and I‘ve crawled on six crooked highways
I‘ve stepped in the middle of seven sad forests
I‘ve been out in front of a dozen dead oceans
I‘ve been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard
And it‘s a hard, and it‘s a hard, it‘s a hard, and it‘s a hard
And it‘s a hard rain‘s a-gonna fall

Blaire Loved watching patti smith's rendition of this at the nobel ceremony. Tears. 8y
MariettaSG Why do you think of Dylan being awarded the Nobel prize for literature? 8y

Lyrics: 1961-2012 | Bob Dylan

I woke up on the roadside
Daydreamin' 'bout the way things sometimes are
Visions of your chestnut mare
Shoot through my head and are makin' me see stars
You hurt the ones that I love best
And cover up the truth with lies
One day you'll be in the ditch
Flies buzzin' around your eyes
Blood on your saddle

Idiot Wind. The whole damn song. This stanza and henceforth though... it's a well deserved award, just for the recognition.

zugchop I'm drinkin' and thinkin', and, yeah... this. *Most* of his catalog... just think it's a shame that IRL I can't express my happiness over this legitimate appreciation of this poet's work. 8y

Congratulations to #BobDylan on the Nobel!
Here's a quote from one of my favourite songs of his, "Just Like A Woman"

BookishMarginalia It turns out I'm more of a purist than I ever thought. I just do not think that the Nobel Prize for Literature should be awarded to a songwriter, regardless of how fabulous a songwriter he is. 8y
Broke_Girl_Reads Have you ever heard the Nina Simone cover of this song? It gives me chills every time. She's one of the only people who can do Bob justice! 8y
manifestsanity I don't feel comfortable when the Nobel Prize for Literature goes to someone I've heard of. 8y
BooksCatsMaine @Broke_Girl_Reads thanks!! I just listened to it, it's excellent! 8y
BooksCatsMaine Lol @manifestsanity how true. Usually at this time I'm frantically amazoning copies before they sell out. This year I can just put on the same record as usual... 8y

What's money? A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and goes to bed at night and in between does what he wants to.

Lyrics: 1961-2012 | Bob Dylan

My clothes are wet, tight on my skin

Not as tight as the corner that I painted myself in

I know that fortune is waitin‘ to be kind

So give me your hand and say you‘ll be mine

Well, the emptiness is endless, cold as the clay

You can always come back, but you can‘t come back all the way

Only one thing I did wrong

Stayed in Mississippi a day too long

-Bob Dylan, “Mississippi
