Diving Belles
Diving Belles: And Other Stories | Lucy Wood
In the tradition of Angela Carter, this luminous, spellbinding debut reinvents the stuff of myth. Straying husbands lured into the sea by mermaids can be fetched back, for a fee. Trees can make wishes come true. Houses creak and keep a fretful watch on their inhabitants, straightening shower curtains and worrying about frayed carpets. A mother, who seems alone and lonely, may be rubbing sore muscles or holding the hands of her invisible lover as he touches her neck. Phantom hounds roam the moors and, on a windy beach, a boy and his grandmother beat back despair with an old white door. In these stories, the line between the real and the imagined is blurred as Lucy Wood takes us to Cornwall's ancient coast, building on its rich storytelling history and recasting its myths in thoroughly contemporary ways. Calling forth the fantastic and fantastical, she mines these legends for that bit of magic remaining in all our lives--if only we can let ourselves see it.

While the writing itself and language was lovely, the majority of these stories seemed to end abruptly with no actual conclusion which became frustrating when you are riveted to the narrative and it ends as if in the middle of a thought, nothing was ever resolved.

I‘m so thrilled with my #StuffedStockingSwap gift that I don‘t even know what to do with myself! 😵 All three of the books are at the top of my TBR list; the forest-scented soy candle smells like a woodland heaven; the sloth blanket is ridiculous (in the best way); & the fuzzy socks have pom-poms on them. I LOVE pom-poms!

I brought it to work to open because I couldn‘t wait; the stockings are hung in the library with care! Thanks @UnidragonFrag !

night_shift Yay! Glad you liked 😃 6y
monalyisha Shout-out to @Avanders for organizing! While I love my family deeply, they‘re not a very literary bunch. As a kid, I was gifted books for Christmas (since they knew that‘s what I really wanted). The books always came from a long series (like the Babysitter‘s Club), so there was no real guesswork. As I got older, they stopped gifting me books (& they didn‘t really want any from me, despite my best efforts). So gifting books again is a pure joy! 6y
Bookzombie I love the sloth blanket! 6y

Congratulations on hitting 10k, @Nessavamusic 🎉!

I‘d be thrilled to receive either the tagged book (“Diving Belles”) by Lucy Wood, or “Mothers, Tell Your Daughters” by Bonnie Jo Campbell. I love a good short story collection, & I‘ve adored novels written by both of these authors.

As for my preferred genre (out of comedy, romance, or fantasy), I‘m gonna go with fantasy. 🔮

Thanks for the #10klabordaygiveaway!

Nessavamusic Thanks for Playing! 6y

Such an eerie collection of short stories. I continually felt like I almost understood what was happening, and just as I figured it out, the story would end.

Lauram You have a very photogenic dog. 💜 (edited) 6y

🏝 🌊 This is a light and fun book of magical realism shorts. All the stories have beach/sea themes. I tore through half of it in just a little over an hour, so it‘s a quickie too! Perfect summer read! 🐚 🧜‍♀️ litsy #summerread

These short stories are full of creepy weird goodness. I don‘t often read s/s- usually I like more plot, more closure - and while you don‘t get that here, you get a beautiful sense of time and place, memorable characters and a growing sense of foreboding. There is something strange or off kilter in every story - the ordinary world turned fantasy. I especially loved ‘Beachcombing‘ ‘Notes from the house spirits‘ and ‘Blue Moon‘ ⬇️

Centique I recommend reading no more than 2 or 3 a day to get the most from this. Otherwise I think they blur together a bit. Book is pictured with my Japanese glass fishing floats - we collect beach and sea stuff amongst other things! 6y
LeahBergen A beautiful review (and photo). 👍🏻 6y

I really enjoyed roughly half of these stories, but felt a bit impatient with the others. Wood‘s prose is beautiful and many of the stories have a lovely, delicate poignancy. Unfortunately, it felt like others lacked an overall point. That said, I enjoyed enough of them enough to recommend it.

I liked the title story but couldn't get into any of the others. The writing was solid, I think it just wasn't my style.

#somethingforsept I'm not a huge fan of short stories but Diving Belles was one of my favorite books that I read this year. After only a few pages, I was hooked! I managed to have some self control and only allowed myself to read it during my afternoon train commute. It was still over too soon! Definitely pick it up and give it a try. 😀

Still reading Jane Steele but needed a break from all things Jane. Rereading this lovely collection of short stories by Lucy Wood. Just the right amount of past and present, reality and magic for tonight.

LauraJ Really like that cover. 9y
