Leonard
Leonard: My Fifty-Year Friendship with a Remarkable Man | William Shatner
Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner first crossed paths as actors on the set of "The Man" "from U.N.C.L.E." Little did they know that their next roles, in a new science fiction television series, would shape their lives in ways no one could have anticipated. In seventy-nine television episodes and six feature films, they grew to know each other more than most friends could ever imagine.Over the course of half a century, Shatner and Nimoy saw each other through personal and professional highs and lows. In this powerfully emotional book, Shatner tells the story of a man who was his friend for five decades, recounting anecdotes and untold stories of their lives on and off set, as well as gathering stories from others who knew Nimoy well, to present a full picture of a rich life.As much a biography of Nimoy as a story of their friendship, "Leonard" is a uniquely heartfelt book written by one legendary actor in celebration of another.

🎧 A weenie bit self-serving BUT heartfelt.

Biography, memoir, fan service.

Shatner‘s narration was wonderful. They had a long history that began before Trek. There are many interesting stories from their 50 year friendship.

So many details including how mind melds, live long & prosper & the Vulcan nerve pinch came about. 😁

I wish there were a few more personal stories but all in all I enjoyed this book. Nimoy was a nice man.

⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Pageturner1 it‘s always nice to find out actors you actually like are really nice people. 4y
Twainy @Pageturner1 Agreed 😁 4y
MemoirsForMe I must move this up on my TBR list. 4y
Twainy @UwannaPublishme Spock 🖤 this book lost a star for all of the focus Mr. Shatner put on himself but to be fair the book is his friendship with him so on some level I knew he‘d talk about himself. I really wish he had shared more personal stories but it was a good book. These are all from the $6 Audible sale! I always find good books in their sales even if I can‘t afford them! 4y
MemoirsForMe Thanks for the tip! Yes, our Capt. Kirk does like to talk about himself—a lot. 🤪 4y

I could imagine William Shattner speaking as I read this, so that was fun. Nobody will accuse Shattner of being a great writer, but this is still a lovely book written about his dear friend whom he loved dearly. It was a nice tribute and good to learn more about the behind the scenes life of Nimoy.

I loved this book. It focused a lot on the original star trek series and how that shaped the relationship between Leonard Nimoy and Shatner. I think I may have missed some details as a result of listening the majority of the time on my commute but I enjoyed it. I will probably read the physical book at some point.

TheWhiteHatter I purchased the physical book late last year and am very excited to read it. Glad to hear you enjoyed it! 7y

Haven't posted in a while. I've been crazy busy with work. But I started this audio book this week. I am one of the few people who like both Star Wars and Star Trek so this could be eye-opening.

Audiobook
You know.... I feel like I learned more about Shatner than I did about Nimoy in thist story. And maybe, knowing that Shatner wrote this book, I should've known that would be the case. But I did learn some intersting things about Star Trek and these two men, and with the close of this book, I'm left wishing I could've known Leonard Nimoy personally.

I recommended this to anyone who is a fan of both Shatner and Nimoy. I think to enjoy this, you have to understand a little about them going into this. The positives: Shatner has a genuine affection for Nimoy that comes across. This feels a little like a love letter to his friend. Shatner seems to understand his own flaws a little better as he is getting older, and he can be self-deprecating in a good way. Review continued in comments.

Krisjericho The negatives: Shatner is still very Shatner-y. He makes a lot of of a book called "Leonard" about Bill. But that's just Shatner. Gotta love him. He still seems to lack some self-awareness about how he can be arrogant and disregard others. I believe he genuinely doesn't get why Nimoy was angry at him those last few years. If you listen on audio, the narration is a little inconsistent. 8y
Krisjericho This is definitely for fans, and it can be tender and funny. Shatner's self-awareness has grown, but he is still a little oblivious. I still love him. And I want to believe the best of him, so I will. He loved Leonard. "I have been, and always shall be, your friend." ❤ 8y

Loretta I have this on audio but haven't read it yet. But did see Shatner speak at DragonCon this past year and he spoke so lovingly of Nimoy. 8y

I really loved this biography about Leonard Nimoy. It was definitely written with great care, appreciation and love by a lifelong friend and that definitely came through in William Shatner's storytelling. I learned some things about this incredible man's career and personality. And although I grew up in the "Next Generation" era of Star Trek, I've definitely been on the Mr. Spock band wagon lol. #LLAP ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My teenaged Trekkie sales force, ready to fill the need if you need something for Shatner to sign.

johnnie_cakes I got to sell books for him at a Con back in May! 8y
StaceyKondla @johnnie_cakes I also sold books for him at the Expo in Calgary in April. He was really nice and thanked me for selling his books 😊 That was a great moment! 8y

50 copies of "Leonard" by William Shatner in my living room that I agreed to sell tomorrow at the Star Trek Convention to people who want William Shatner to sign a copy, because ...

Well, I don't know why I'm doing half of the things I do most days.

BookishFeminist 😂😂😂 this at least sounds like a fantastic problem to have 8y

MemoirsForMe Leonard would be proud of you! 😊🖖🏻 8y
Yossarian @BookishFeminist I know! I mean, I don't work for a bookstore or publisher or Star Trek media company or anything, and yet I have a reserved table, chairs, and books in a room right next to Captain Kirk! (And Chekhov, too, I believe.) 8y
PurpleyPumpkin Are you actually going to meet William Shatner? *swoon* 8y
Yossarian @PurpleyPumpkin I don't even know. I've never done anything like this before. All I've got is the boxes of stuff, and a cell phone number for someone named "Carmen." I haven't even opened the boxes. For all I know, I'm being used as a sci-fi drug mule. I should at least be Kirk-adjacent when Starfleet arrests me. 8y
Readingismyescape You will have to let us know how it goes. I love Star Trek. Starting watching when I was a kid. 8y
PurpleyPumpkin 😂Kirk-adjacent would still make me swoon. Hope you have fun and can't wait to hear about your adventures! Um, maybe you should check the boxes? Then again, maybe not. 8y

TheBookDream Good book. I understand it's very a very controversial one in Trek circles (understandably. It almost seems like profiting off the loss of another). Walter Koenig is really interesting to listen too at panels! 8y

Space, the final frontier... My Trekkie is showing! I'm so psyched to see Star Trek Beyond tonight! Mr. Nimoy brought my childhood hero to life and I am heartbroken that he is not here to witness Star Trek's 50th. Even so, "Leonard" is a heartwarming memoir written by another Trek legend about the incredible man who gave Mr. Spock life. For more fond memories of the man and the character you should also pick up "I Am Spock" by Nimoy himself.

So I'm a huge Trekkie fan, I get it from my Dad, who just texted me the other day and said only "Star Trek 22 days!!" Reading this book is almost like reading about a familiar home. I've read both Shatners other Star Trek memoirs so I'm used to his writing. It's a very nice book about an amazing man

Shatner can't resist talking about himself but it still works. There is a deep and respectful friendship here and nothing but gratitude for having known and loved the man.

'Leonard' would've benefited from a heavier editorial hand, but it's a worthwhile read. Shatner's genuine affection shines through in this recounting of their famous friendship & his audiobook narration works well w/the book's conversational tone. I found myself moved nearly to tears more than once.

I'm a lifelong Star Trek fan and an admirer of Leonard Nimoy, both professionally and personally, so picking this audiobook up at half price in the Audible members sale (50% off everything through midnight 4/18) was a no brainer. Shatner's narrations are always a treat so I'm ready to get started!

LizzyNanney Yes! I haven't read this yet but I'm also a Trekkie and I read one of his books of poetry last year. I love this man! 9y
