Sonya Sones, award-winning author of What My Mother Doesnt Know, delivers a gripping, funny, and inspiring novel in verse about what happens when the person you set out to save ends up saving you. Right before winter break, fourteen-year-old Molly Rosenberg reluctantly volunteers to participate in Santa Monicas annual homeless count, just to get her schools community service requirement out of the way. But when she ends up meeting Red, a spirited homeless girl only a few years older than she is, Molly makes it her mission to reunite her with her family in time for Christmas. This turns out to be extremely difficultbecause Red refuses to talk about her past. There are things Molly wont talk about either. Like the awful thing that happened last winter. She may never be ready to talk about that. Not to Red, or to Cristo, the soulful boy she meets while riding the Ferris wheel one afternoon. When Molly realizes that the friends who Red keeps mentioning are nothing more than voices inside Reds head, she becomes even more concerned about her well-being. How will Molly keep her safe until she can figure out a way to get Red home? In Sonya Soness latest novel, two girls, with much more in common than they realize, give each other a new perspective on the meaning of family, friendship, and forgiveness.

Mehso-so

This is a story told in verse about a young girl whose family has experienced trauma and loss, trying to help a homeless girl get back to her own family. It was okay, but I wasn‘t really engaged. It has a nice message—that homeless people have histories and families that love them and we should never forget that. I expected a certain level of lyricism from the verse, but it was lacking. The reveal about Molly‘s family is handled well.

Oddly, there were a lot of similarities between this one and The Chaos of Standing Still. The main characters struggle with anxiety that stems from past traumatic events. They both meet great guys who are accepting of their quirks. And they both are on a mission. In this one, Molly meets a homeless girl named Red and is determined to get her back to her family by Christmas. This one was written in verse form.

I enjoy books like this that are written in different ways. This author does it in poetry. Saving Red deals with the topic of mental illness. I think it did a great job at showing the outsider's view of the chaos but also shows the other side when it's not as strong.

A perfect novel for anyone who loves someone that is mentally ill! I'm growing to really appreciate books written in verse. Now I know why my students love this one.

We have been out of school now for 8 weeks. Yesterday the students were allowed back into the building, socially distanced of course, to gather personal belongings from their locker. I supervised a good portion of the day and spent some time in my classroom straightening up. These are the books I rescued from my classroom bookshelves for summer reading. Where should I start? #teachersoflitsy

A novel in verse.

Molly and her service dog, Pixel, go everywhere together.

They meet a homeless girl and Molly decides to help Red by reuniting her with her family for Christmas. Molly thinks helping Red will let her deal with her guilt over the bad thing that Molly did to destroy her family.

Molly also meets handsome, sensitive Cristo, and they fall in love at first sight. (Ugh.)

A quick and dramatic read. Quite enjoyed the poetry thrown in here and there. Recommend.

Book fair at the nearby Barnes & Noble today. 10% of book fair purchases will go to our Friends of the Library who support us in many ways.
So you want me to buy books to support our library? Hmmm, I guess I can do that. 🤗😆😜
I picked up several recommended by Littens. Thanks all. 😊
(I suspect the book bag will soon become a cat cave.) 😂

I just wanted to share because it struck me how similar these covers are. (I haven't read either of these yet, but a student told me Saving Red was good. It's written in verse.)
