Memoirs | Pablo Neruda
12 posts | 6 read | 1 reading | 6 to read
The classic and deeply moving memoir by Pablo Neruda, the most widely read political poet of our time and winner of the Nobel Prize The south of Chile was a frontier wilderness when Pablo Neruda was born in 1904. In these memoirs he retraces his bohemian student years in Santiago; his sojourns as Chilean consul in Burma, Ceylon, and Java, in Spain during the civil war, and in Mexico; and his service as a Chilean senator. Neruda, a Communist, was driven from his senate seat in 1948, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. After a year in hiding, he escaped on horseback over the Andes and then to Europe; his travels took him to Russia, Eastern Europe, and China before he was finally able to return home in 1952. The final section of the memoirs was written after the coup in 1972 that overthrew Neruda's friend Salvador Allende. Many of the century's most important literary and artistic figures were Neruda's friends, and figure in his memoirs--Garcia Lorca, Aragon, Picasso, and Rivera, among them--and also such political leaders as Gandhi, Nehru, Mao, Castro, and Che Guevara. In his uniquely expressive prose, Neruda not only explains his views on poetry and describes the circumstances that inspired many of his poems, but he creates a revealing record of his life as a poet, a patriot, and one of the twentieth century's true men of conscience.

1. Howard Allen Frances O'Brien aka Anne Rice
2. I love Pablo Neruda's poems. I was surprised to find out that this was not the poet's real name. It's Ricardo Neftalí Reyes Basoalto.
3. It's fun to find out authors' pseudonyms but it's not something I am looking out for.

First read of 2018. Beautifully written; Neruda allows me to visit so many exotic places and learn so much history. Glad I read this.

MommyWantsToReadHerBook I'm trying to figure out whether this is the same as his Memoirs, which I loved. One of my favourite books ever. 7y

What a way to start the day! Neruda writes beautifully, I feel like I'm right there with him. He also reawakens my love for South America and reminds me of how much I want to go back to that amazing continent.

Lcsmcat I love your chickadee pillow! 7y
LA_Mead Love that blanket! 7y
HannaPolkadots @Lcsmcat - I love that you just taught me a new English word 😉 had no idea this bird was called chikadee in English. 7y
HannaPolkadots Thanks @LA_Mead - I found it on pinterest once and just had to make 😉 am so happy with how it turned out! 7y
LA_Mead @HannaPolkadots wow! That‘s so cool! I‘m going to have to check Pinterest and see if I can find a pattern like that one... 7y

#day4 My #notinEnglish pick is Pablo Neruda. The master of love. 💕 The book listed is the English version of his memoir. Gorgeous. Read it! #seasonsreadings2016

Librarianaut I love Neruda!! One of the best vacation adventures I ever had was touring his home in Chile. It was quirky and beautiful and the beach it was set above was wild and inspiring. 8y
Books_Wine_Repeat @Librarianaut That sounds like an amazing trip!! It's going on my bucket list!! 💗 8y
Well-ReadNeck Ooooh! I adore Neruda (and did even before I met my husband, whose first language is Spanish). Stacking now!! 8y

Got this email from Amazon and figured it's a good enough reason to try a memoir, a genre I've been wanting to read more of. Hit me with your fave memoir. Nothing too violent, or involving animal or child abuse please. Can't do it. In general, I love historical fiction, literary fiction, and YA. TIA! #memoir #recommend

beagle.mama @Liberty Got somethin' good for me here? 😍💜😍 8y
GlitteryOtters I just posted one of my favorite memoirs for today's November photo a day...it's a memoir about running and writing, but really it is an examination of a lot of things: human limits and endurance, perseverance, goals, aging, etc. 8y
GlitteryOtters Also, I am seriously envious, I did NOT get that offer, i buy too many memoirs to qualify, probably 😂 I will think on this tonight (heading to bed now), will pop back on tomorrow with more if I think of them (most of the memoirs I read are either historical ones with some potentially difficult subject matter, or focused on particular people and only interested if you know their writing, films, etc. 8y

GlitteryOtters So, I went through my books this morning, came up with a list...and then found that several are either not on kindle or just plain not in print. 😞 I did find that some are both in print & on Kindle, so I'll tag them here for you. First, a couple of Alaska centric memoirs that I love (I haven't been back since 2008, but Alaska is one of my favorite places) 8y
GlitteryOtters This one is a fascinating story, not sure if Amazon will count it as memoir as it was written by a pro writer using the subjects journals & photos, but if it counts it is well worth the purchase. 8y
GlitteryOtters Also not sure if they'll count diaries as "memoir", but if they do, one of my absolute favorites is this one, by a young artist (their Kindle edition is books 1 & 2 and, funny story, when it came out i excitedly grabbed it, as I had been waiting forever for book 2 & found that one of my high school acquaintances, who had studied French with me, helped the editor/translator pull it together...Small world!) 8y
GlitteryOtters Gene Logsdon writes really good memoirs about a rural/garden centered life (sounds boring, but they aren't! His sense of humor is fun, and his experiences & perspective is much different than mine, so I enjoy a peek into his brain). I'm not sure if they count these as memoir, garden essays, general essays or what, but worth looking into. Here are some available on Kindle 8y
GlitteryOtters (Also, not available on Kindle, but this is one of my favorite memoirs ever & is well worth reading, if you are looking for something to grab from the library) 8y
GlitteryOtters Ok, I thought "memoir" was defined as "self written biography" or something close to that, but a quick check shows that Amazon lists Chernow's Alexander Hamilton bio as a "memoir"...I *highly* recommend it, but it can be a bit daunting due to its size & scope (don't let the page count scare you, though, if memory serves, over 25% of this Kindle was footnotes & bibliography) 8y
GlitteryOtters They also list this book as a "memoir"...not sure I would count it as such, but if you are an introvert, or interested in the mindset of introverts, Susan Cain's Quiet is an amazing read. 8y
GlitteryOtters Last but not least, I haven't read it yet, but Amazon lists this as a memoir & it is one of my most anticipated reads for this month (I'm hoping to get to it after the election--reading it is my reward for doing all of my pre-election research on candidates/issues). Good luck!!!! 8y
beagle.mama @GlitteryOtters Thank you soooo much!! I can't wait to decide what to get! You've been a great help. 8y
kiminreverse The Glass Castle! 8y
GlitteryOtters I thought of another really good memoir! And it is currently only $3.99 on Kindle! The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio. 8y

My #bookssetinsamerica are severely lacking. Of these two, GGMarquez is the most recognized and Neruda, imo, is the most underrated. His poetry is beautiful and heart wrenching. Go read it. Now! 🇨🇱🇨🇴
