The Girl with No Name
The Girl with No Name: The Incredible Story of a Child Raised by Monkeys | Marina Chapman, Lynne Barrett-Lee
9 posts | 12 read | 43 to read
The unbelievable true story of a young girl who is abandoned in the Colombian jungle and finds asylum in the most unlikely of placeswith a troop of capuchin monkeys? In 1954, in a remote mountain village in South America, a little girl was abducted. She was four years old. Marina Chapman was stolen from her housing estate and then abandoned deep in the Colombian jungle. That she survived is a miracle. Two days later, half-drugged, terrified, and starving, she came upon a troop of capuchin monkeys. Acting entirely on instinct, she tried to do what they did: she ate what they ate and copied their actions, and little by little, learned to fend for herself. So begins the story of her five years among the monkeys, during which time she gradually became feral; she lost the ability to speak, lost all inhibition, lost any real sense of being human, replacing the structure of human society with the social mores of her new simian family. But society was eventually to reclaim her. At age ten, she was discovered by a pair of hunters who took her to the lawless Colombian city of Cucuta where, in exchange for a parrot, they sold her to a brothel. When she learned that she was to be groomed for prostitution, she made her plans to escape. But her adventure wasnt over yet . . . In the vein of Slumdog Millionaire and City of God, this rousing story of a lost child who overcomes the dangers of the wild and the brutality of the streets to finally reclaim her life will astonish readers everywhere.

This enthralling memoir recounts the author‘s childhood and is horrifying, fascinating and impossible to stop listening! From being kidnapped to taken in by monkeys to darker horrors of rejoining humanity, I wanted Marina‘s life story to continue on!! I‘m dying to know what happens next in her larger than life life that made #AudioColoring so fun!!

Mehso-so

I have a hard time believing the whole story. There‘s so much detail when she was little. I don‘t remember anything from at 4. But it was very interesting.

Book haul 2/3! As some of you may be aware I loooove mythology and this reference dictionary is amazing. I also have this weird fascination with ‘feral children.‘ 🤷🏻‍♀️ #mythology #bookhaul

LeahBergen The Girl With No Name is good! You should also check out 6y

This gets some kind of an award for a creepy cover. The first half of this book is about her time growing up with monkeys after being kidnapped at the age of 5 and abandoned in the jungle. The rest of the book tells of her horrendous experiences after returning to civilization. Yup, unfortunately, living with monkeys is a whole lot nicer than living with humans. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 3.5/5 stars.

saresmoore Hahaha! I love your review and oh my goodness, that cover is bizarre! 7y

This might seem a strange choice to read after Heart Berries but come on! Kidnapped at 4, dropped off deep in a jungle, and raised by monkeys for 5 years. I need to know more. I‘m going in.

AmyG Whoa. I read the summary and that‘s some story. 7y
Crazeedi Wow, this looks like a crazy story!!! 7y

#DecDays Day 13: It is always a cause for #Celebration whenever a former student hands something as precious as this as a present after she has graduated and gotten her Masters Degree. This, right here, is what makes everything worthwhile.

Another #MemorableMemoir. The cover blurb on this one sums it up quite nicely but the rest of the book also covers her life AFTER she is brought out of the jungle. Mind-blowing. 😮 #MemorableMemoirs #Booktober
