Getting close to the end of my #PhryneMarathon with the end of this outing. This has a lot of interesting information about the Victorian goldrush in the 1800s & the large population of Chinese that emigrated to work on them. There‘d be quite a few Australian Chinese that would be able to trace their families back to that pretty lawless part of history. After finding a mummified young man, Phryne & Lin Chung travel to Castlemaine to find answers.

Continuing on my journey of rereading the Phryne Fisher series via audiobook, I just finished book 13. It‘s quite good (like the rest of the series imo!) — as much as I love Jack Robinson in the show as a romantic interest for Phryne, that‘s how much I love Lin Chung in the books. ❤️ 4⭐️

Crazeedi I love Phryne, and I've read several, but you just gave me the great idea of seeing if I can find them on audio from my library! I think that would be fun, they are great stories ❤ 5y
JenlovesJT47 @Crazeedi the audiobooks are SO good! The narrator is phenomenal and she captures Phryne‘s essence perfectly. ❤️ 5y

I don‘t really do seasonal reading (apart from reserving obviously Christmassy books for December) so I don‘t have a #FavouriteFallRead, so here‘s my current read instead!

Bk13 Of The Phryne Fisher series is done. We‘re introduced to her sister, Eliza, in this story plus we get to know more about Lin Chungs extended family plus we learn a bit about how Chinese families came to Australia during the gold rush & how the families are organized with everyone having a place & a purpose. I love book Phryne & Lin Chung, they make the most amazing couple. Tv Phryne & Jack are hard to compare. #phryneappreciationclub

MrsMalaprop As in Castlemaine Victoria? My dad‘s from there and I spent many a school holiday there with my Nana as a child 💕. 6y
Lizpixie @MrsMalaprop yep, that Castlemaine. It contains quite a bit of info about what it would‘ve been like there back in the gold rush days and in the 1920s.🇦🇺 6y
GlassAsDiamonds I loved this one! (Death Before Wicket is my favourite - Sydneysider! but this was brilliant). Agree about TV Jack/ Phryne... annoys me so much they‘ve left out Lin. 😡😡😡😡 Such a wasted opportunity. 6y
Lizpixie @GlassAsDiamonds Sydneysider here too! I was googling photos of Woolloomooloo & Sydney Harbour & University in the 1920s to get a feel of what it would‘ve been like. It‘s hard to reconcile those pictures of slums & grubby kids playing in the street with the exorbitantly expensive suburb it is now! And they definitely missed an opportunity with Lin. Even when he was in, what, 2 eps the actor wasn‘t even full Chinese Australian.🤦🏻‍♀️ 6y
GlassAsDiamonds @Lizpixie Sydney Uni I was easy but yeah, Woolloomooloo as a slum is hard (funnily enough, Glebe I could totally see!!!). I haven‘t been able to face much of the TV series, I‘m just such a fan of Jack in the books but sheesh! Of all the book series to whitewash, this is particularly stupid! 6y

I'm pretty sure if these books had released in Phryne's time period they would have made the banned books list. Its why I love this Phryne! Chinese Lover, Sapphic Sister, and Socialists. Definitely #mymotherwouldnotapprove #phryneappreciationclub #rebelreader

Love love love Phryne! This outing was brilliant, I love the tv series, but adore the books because there's so much more Lin Chung! Phryne's Chinese lover is just too delicious for words, everyone needs a Lin in their life at least once. The introduction of Phrynes little sister was fabulous as well, I can see her having more of a role in future novels. All up, another highly entertaining outing for the Honorable Miss Phryne Fisher.💄💋💃🏻

Lynnsoprano Just ordered a collection of the first three books. 8y
Lizpixie @Lynnsoprano you won't regret it, but there's 18 novels so far I think, so be prepared to absolutely having to acquire all of them. 8y
Emiller Absolutely LOVE Phryne!! 8y
ReadingEnvy I've watched the entire series but I think I've only read books 1-3. I love the audio too. 8y
Verity I love Phryne. I've read them all and am hoping for another one soon. I like the books better than the TV series, but that's probably because I read the books first! 8y

I have spent this hot Boxing Day hiding out in my beautifully air conditioned library, reading about Phryne's adventures with Lin Chung, investigating the death of a mummified body & the disappearance of a large amount of Lin family gold from the goldfields of Castlemaine during the gold rush in 1857. Seeing as the rest of this week will be from 36C to a ridiculous 41C, I foresee lots of reading in the foreseeable future and a reduction in my TBR!

Dedebimp Adelaide? 8y

Texreader It is hot and humid here in Texas. So winter isn't all that exciting here either. 8y

Merry Xmas from Sydney, Australia! Sitting here watching the tree lights and thanking god that we don't have little kids anymore. So many Xmas eves spent wrapping & building bikes & trikes & lots of fiddly difficult tiny things! Now we can just relax and enjoy the peace and tranquility. I hope wherever you are in the world, your Xmas is a warm, loving, and fun day full of family, laughter and love.😘🎄🎅🏻❤️💚🎅🏻🎄😘
