Finished Burr a while back and never commented --it was great! Very lively and witty style, and highly ironic. Loved the format of Burr narrating the story of his life to a young assistant, so the story of his last years runs in parallel to his memoir. He had an interesting life, but didn't accomplish much--if not for his killing of Hamilton, Burr would be completely forgotten. By the way--love the contemptuous portrayal of Jefferson, whom I hate!
Burr along with many others including "To The Stars" by George Takei for my #litsyatoz in the Friday afternoon book haul with @Kat_Reads ??. We ❤️❤️❤️ us some halfprice books. I think ? ended up with more than me???
I was working in bookstores for a good portion of the time that Gore Vidal was publishing the 7 Empire novels. I remember them coming out, and not being interested, because although I did like historical fiction, I wasn't at the time interested in American history. I am now, and am loving Burr! It took seeing Hamilton to break the ice with Vidal.
Since most of what Donald Trump says is complete fiction, I'd say this year's political campaign for US president is the best example of #politicalfiction. In an earlier era, do you think Trump could have survived all the duel challenges from men whose honor he'd offended?

Thinking I should pull this off my shelf and read it as a counterpoint to all the Hamilton lyrics still running through my head.
"...a concentrated fierce gaze, rather like that of a sow about to cannibalise her piglets". Descriptions such as these kept me entertained as I read. BURR is a good beginning to Vidal's Narrative of Empire series, but very male-centric; females are very much minor characters here. It'll be interesting to see how the series continue. LINCOLN is next but I'm going to read something different before getting to it.
"The small dull eyes in their vast sockets stared at me with wonder". This is General George Washington that Burr is referring to. I had forgotten that no one escapes Burr's scathing and sardonic observations, not even good ol' George. Enjoying this re-read so far. (Historic fiction penned by Gore Vidal).
Gore Vidal wrote a series of seven historical fiction books, currently known as Narratives of Empire. Burr is the 1st, and see the old copy at the right I read from eons ago. At that time, the 2nd, Lincoln, was off my radar (if it had even been published yet). Now that I know of the series, am starting with Burr once again and will fill in as I go b/c Hollywood is #6. I remember Burr's POV being negative towards Hamilton! (No surprise there).
In the words of Thomas Jefferson: WHAAAAAT? My Hamilton-themed reading list grows ever longer with this novel about Aaron Burr telling his story to a reporter who happens to have the last name of Schuyler. I've never read any of Vidal's American history books, so here we go. $1.99 ebook today.
