Show Stopper | Hayley Barker

Pickpick

The deadliest circus in the world. And I don't say that lightly. Show Stopper is a world that imagines the extreme reality of racism and class wars. And all in a Young Adult book! Ben, the son of a powerful government minister is enthralled by a Dreg tightrope walker Hoshiko's performance but when tensions rise between both classes, they must decide what matters most.

I loved Hoshiko's stern character and Ben's disenchantment from all the lies.

sarahlostbutfound I really want to read this now! 7y

Pickpick

I would definitely recommend it - if not to unsettle your preexisting knowledge about the Iraq, then to expose what makes a human.

'I touched my disheveled hair, matted with dirt and dried blood. I smelled the odor of my body, emitted most strongly from between my blood-smeared legs. I touched my hair, my face, and I cried. I cried quietly, a painful, continuous moaning that lasted all night...'

Satanic Verses | Salman Rushdie

Panpan

Bar from the problematic resemblances to Islam, I find Rushdie's writing too flowery and unnecessarily complicated.

The novel suggests religion is a subjective set of beliefs adopted to reassure people of their purpose in life but I don't agree with that. It's not hard to see why it offended people of faith.

Do you have an author whose writing you don't enjoy or a disliked book that's popular?

'"You know what you are, I'll tell you. A deserter is what, more English than, your Angrez accent wrapped around you like a flag, and don't think it's so perfect, it slips, baba, like a false moustache"'.

As well as a religion, I'm starting to see a colonial and cultural discourse in satanic verses.

Folktales of Iraq | E. S. Stevens, Arnold Wilson

Pickpick

"Now, finding Husain a pretty fellow, the s'iluwa (witch) did not eat him, but took him to her lair on the shore, where she made love to him, licking his legs so that they became thin and the bones lost their hardness and were like the wick of a candle."
~
E.S. Stevens' collection of folktales from Iraq was an absolute pleasure to read yesterday. The mad and mythical stories share ancestry with those from Grimm and Thousand Nights and One Night.
