⭐⭐⭐⭐ CONFRONTING, SUPERB - all about the realities, the imperfection and banality of life and the power and tension of stepfamilies, siblings and the difficulties of people who don't choose to be connected, connecting. Her writing and ability to conjure the character in the moment is breathtaking at times. The opening orange juicing affair inducing drink making scene with stay with you forever.

CarolynM I loved this one too. ❤️ 6y

🌟🌟 PREDICTABLE and needed significant editing. Nonetheless evoked 1920s England and a life in service well. A very light read. The Forgotten Garden was substantially better.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 BEYOND BEAUTIFUL
All the stars. Lives up to all the hype and is simply one of the most compelling poignantly written books I have read. The naturalist/ marsh-land and wildlife writing is superb. It delves into what wildness means and the crushing cycle of being let down/heartbreak and the shutdown process. Courtroom scenes rushed and ending needed more work. But I could not have cared less by then. A special one.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ OUTSTANDING
One of the greatest children's bedtime story reads of all time. Kids enraptured, me, tears rolling down the cheeks with the simple beauty of the story of a reject mouse which covers all of life's big tickets - love, family, betrayal, hierarchy, injustice, freedom, oppression, bravery and linguistics! Read it to your little ones. Read it out-loud.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ HARROWING extraordinarily deep autobiographical tale of the power and force of the human spirit to oppress and also to break free and the unwavering pull of home and family. Beautifully written, raw. This book will stay with me forever. Not a beach holiday read!

? "When it comes to kissing, the Parisienne does it the same way she does everything else : with cinematic flair. Preferably, all kissing should take place in the middle of the street.."?

Bought this as I follow one of the incredulously chic authors, model and chanel muse (married to rockstar too ?) Caroline de maigret on instagram. She seems as Parisian as they come. How would she would write about my Paris, being someone I am not, but would ? to be. Pure voyeurism. This is a great "dip-in-dip-out" reference book, rather than a cover to cover read . A great list of secrets and try- hard rules to follow before my next visit.

"Marvellous. There is no feeling like discovering a young writer who is springing up fully armed with so much talent" says Stephen Fry. High praise indeed! I shall be the judge of that ?

Manhattan Beach: A Novel | Jennifer Egan

So much potential which it did not achieve for me. Disjointed plot and narrative..threads were developed then just dropped - what happened to everyone? Certainly not the full fledged evocative historical piece it was billed to be. LOVED the Lydia story and the Manhatten Beach scene with her - the highlight. That kept me going, hoping there would be more like that. Lover scene was also excellent/hot! Borderline Pan for me. 😯😬

BookishMarginalia This one was meh for me too. 6y
monalyisha Ugh. This is my book club‘s choice for this month & I haven‘t started it yet/am not looking forward to it. 6y
Oracle @monalyisha oh! sorry monalyisha...lots of people seems to have liked it. It does have parts that are magic - find those ! 6y

monalyisha I ended up liking it just fine. I did notice that certain characters seemed to have very little point. I didn‘t care about Eddie‘s plot lines very much at all, unfortunately. All of the politics between Dunny/the Syndicate were pretty gosh-darn boring. I agree with your assessment of the story‘s strongest scenes! Another reviewer said she didn‘t buy the love/lust storyline but that was one piece I *could* get down with... so to speak. 😏 6y
Oracle @monalyisha glad you liked it after all!!. Agree with you just did not care about a lot of the threads. 6y
Oracle @monalyisha and yes absolutely no issue with the lust storyline for me either 😉 6y

?"...he was also thinking : this is the problem of men and woman , what made the professional harmony he envisaged so difficult to achieve. Men ran the world, and they wanted to f@ck the woman. Men said " Girls are weak" when in fact girls made them weak."?

Freespirit I enjoyed this book 6y

I cannot remember the last time I gasped out loud at the end of a book...devoured this. Loved it very much. Such unusually poignant bare divine prose. Can see why it might not have universal appeal...noone likes a cheater...

placebeyondthespines Wasn‘t it just divine?🖤 Hands down my fave read of the year. 6y
Oracle @placebeyondthespines Just divine!!! Soooooo good. I was not expecting it and BOOM I could not put it down read it cover to cover. The way she captured the awkward difficult tense boring moments . I loved Elinor Elephont but this pipped it. I literally gasped out loud at the end and burst into tears. Cant remember the last time that happened, just superb. Glad to find others who loved it. Not for e'one...little too close to bone perhaps 6y
