My criticisms only sound harsher because of the 450 something word limit. :) add me on Goodreads where the long reviews are: Thea Vanessa

🌟3/5🌟
Not a thriller at all. It‘s more so a retelling of a traumatic, heartbreaking childhood, heavily inspired from the Turpin case. The author likes to switch different timelines a lot (almost every paragraph) and it gets very confusing which timeline you‘re in or which character is being referred to. It‘s one of those things where you gotta read a few more sentences to get the gist. Starts slow but starts picking up towards the end!

Also got started with a new book. I doubt I‘ll finish this before the new year but it‘s been in my #tbr for so long!

I‘m on a long vacation, but it‘s coming to a close so quickly. I don‘t want this holiday the end so I can just keep reading.

I‘m back from the dead & have posted some reviews of previous reads. I lost touch with posting about books for a bit. So much has happened but here I am again and I look forward to seeing what everyone‘s been reading.

Today I continued reading Girl A by Abigial Dean with a super red strawberry chocolate drink. 🩸 I guess the Christmas spirit has not come off me yet. I hope to read more before the year ends!

The book concerned itself with too many characters and it tried to describe all of the different phases of their lives no matter how irrelevant they were to the core of the story. It muddled Alma and Ichimei‘s relationship. Until the end, I couldn‘t appreciate their relationship. There was also too much narration and very little dialogue. Everything is described exactly leaving little room for one‘s imagination.

This book was really just about the eldest sister (Korede) cleaning up after serial killer sister‘s (Ayoola) mess. The book was far too short and lacked too much depth for me to fully understand why Ayoola was the way she was. Instead, we get Korede‘s bitter POV throughout the book. There‘s no growth at all with any of them until the end. Ayoola stays shallow, Korede‘s stays bitter, and their mom is forever in-denial.

I liked reading about Anna‘s trickery and her complexities despite being a con. But honestly, everyone, including Rachel, was bad with their money. Rachel tried to make herself look like a saint contrary to Anna, but she‘s conceited in her own way all the same. Her daftness led to the amount of debt she incurred and the more it dragged the less I sympathized with her. Just wannabes wanting the luxe life they can‘t afford.

Nice to get my early morning reading in when everyone is fast asleep. I‘m here visiting my family and I know I‘ll be distracted hanging out with them all day, so it‘s nice to get some quiet time. I get how early risers feel about mornings now. #goodmorning #readingtime #quiettime

I‘m only a few pages in but the book has made me feel very doleful. It reminds me so much about myself. Having lived in the US for so long, I‘m only able to see Philippines from a social media standpoint. Knowing that I have friends and family there during the drug war makes me worry about them, and I‘ve done absolutely nothing to help the cause. To my Filipino/FilAm friends who have lived in the US for so long, this book is a nice wake up call.

Blew me out of the water! Just like the first book, #Gemina was hard to put down. The ending definitely pushes you to buy the 3rd book, so I guess I‘m seeing Obsidio in my doorstep sometime soon. The only issue I ever had is the inapposite sense of humor (just like the first book). Lots of joking in the middle of a crisis. This seems to be true for the first book as well, so maybe it‘s just something I need to get used to. Nevertheless 10/10!

I‘m sad I read this so slowly because of school because I love the book! I admit that most drama-type fiction I read leaves me feeling indifferent, but this stood out to me because of the quirky protagonist. The summary is far too modest, this book is a gem. It made me laugh and I nearly cried in some parts which is not something I do with this type of genre. Very beautifully put together. Up next is Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris!

“Eyelids are really just flesh curtains. Your eyes are always ‘on,‘ always looking; when you close them, you‘re watching the thin, veined skin of your inner eyelid rather than staring out at the world. It‘s not a comforting thought. In fact, if I thought about it for long enough, I‘d probably want to pluck out my own eyes, to stop looking, to stop seeing all the time. The things I‘ve seen cannot be unseen. The things I‘ve done cannot be undone.”

BookishEscapade I love this novel 😍 5y
avxi @Thewanderer92 Eleanor‘s personality really threw me in for a loop. The summary in the back of the book doesn‘t do her quirkiness justice. This novel is superb!!! 5y
BookishEscapade @theasaurus I‘m glad you‘re enjoying it! Made me cry a few times lol 5y

And I thought this book was just about some woman living a pretty stagnant life, but Eleanor is something else. I can‘t wait to read more. Though I‘m pretty drowsy at the moment. The greasy food I‘ve been stuffing myself with has made me extremely lethargic. Also, I want to have a pen pal. Anyone up for it? #nowreading

Now finally reading this, but through my phone. It‘s going to be a different experience because I prefer reading with a hard copy so much more! So can someone tell me if the bfc‘s are self-started or do I have to join some organized competition to get started with a bfc? A newbie asking for a friend.

I don‘t read much about outer space dilemmas. This one is my 1st of the theme, but HOLY S#*%! From the cover to the end, everything is absolutely unique. The book is narrated through documents, reports, chats, e-mails, and wonderful graphics that pull you into the story like as if you‘re witnessing and experiencing the moment as you flip through the pages. It is unconventionally intense. And now I plan to invest on the 2nd book of the series.

After finishing my previous book, I wanted to move straight to the next on my shelf. I bought this book more for its messy, document-like aesthetic. Heh. and now I wonder if I‘ll like its science-fiction/romance storyline since I‘m not big into this type of young adult fiction. Will I want to read the rest of The Illuminae Files series (Gemina & Obsidio)? We‘ll find out. If you have read it, what are your thoughts about this book?

julesG Loved it! Wasn't even expecting a romance, they broke up. I was in it for the crazy "young girl needs to save the world/spaceships" storyline - and AIDAN. ? Got all three books, got the audiobooks and recently bought the first two books in German for my son. 5y
avxi @julesG now I‘m excited. ❤️ right now calls for bed time for me. It‘s a little past midnight and I have to leave early for work tomorrow. But I wish I could get started already! 5y
julesG Have a good night! I'm starting my day with a cat sitting on my headphones. (I usually listen to an audiobook until the kids get up) 5y

avxi Just started getting into it recently. Wasn‘t expecting the eeriness and I‘m all about it! 5y
avxi @LibrarianRyan @julesG I just finished the book!!!! It was so amazing!!! I must admit though, Ezra was driving me a little crazy with his very flippant personality. 5y
LibrarianRyan @theasaurus I agree. Book two is different people, but you get a bit of connections back to these characters. I started out not liking book 2, but that only lasted like 50-100 pages. And that has more to do with drug use than anything. It was just as good as book 1. 5y
julesG @LibrarianRyan agree. The drugs rubbed me the wrong way, too. 5y
avxi @LibrarianRyan ooh okay! Well i look forward to reading it for myself and I hope soon. My semester is about to start and I don‘t know how busy everything will be! 5y
LibrarianRyan @theasaurus It goes just as quick as the first book. I'm just not into reading about the drug trade. It's a plot device within the book that is only majorly present at the beginning (no spoilers here) But once the action started I was hooded. I almost liked it better than book 1. 5y

I finally finished this book! Thank you The Alice Network for being so great. It was a bittersweet ending topped with a feel of pride and honor. Such brave women to remind us that we ladies can endure hard times. Endure. ❤️

I also thank the thunderstorm for trapping me in the library so I had the chance to read. I‘m afraid of thunder and refuse to go outside in the middle of a storm! #historicalfiction

I have been wanting to go to my city‘s downtown or some cafe but both require a bus commute that makes me anxious so I‘ve always just chosen not to go. But today I mustered up the courage and went for it as soon as I woke up. It gave me a chance to read! I‘ve owned this book for almost a year. Because of my never-ending busy schedule I never really got into reading it too much until today. A much needed break.

I‘m pretty proud of myself today.
