It | Stephen King

"'Maybe', he thought, 'there aren't any such things as good friends or bad friends - maybe there are just friends, people who stand by you when you're hurt and who help you feel not so lonely. Maybe they're always worth being scared for, and hoping for, and living for. Maybe worth dying for, too, if that's what has to be. No good friends. No bad friends. Only people you want, need to be with; people who build their little houses in your heart.'"

"...and in that one moment they all felt it... and perhaps understood best the dreadful power of the thing that had brought them back. IT lives... and he felt suddenly that IT was the seventh; that IT and time were somehow interchangeable, that IT wore all their faces as well as the thousands of others IT had terrified and killed... and the idea that IT might be THEM was somehow the most frightening idea of all."

A Thousand Splendid Suns | Khaled Hosseini
Pickpick

After The Kite Runner, I didn't think it was possible to fall any more in love with Hosseini's emotional & moving storytelling. Boy was I wrong... This book left me a sappy, weepy mess, & even more enamored with his ability to demolish the heart's barriers. My favorite of the two so far. Will definitely be picking up his most recent (And the Mountains Echoed) in the near future. Just not immediately, as I need time to recover from all the feels 💔

"Not that they give a damn in America, mind you. What do they care that Pashtuns and Hazaras and Tajiks and Uzbeks are killing each other?? How many Americans can even tell one from the other?? Don't expect help from them, I say... To them, Afghanistan is a kenarab, a shit hole. Excuse my language, but it's true."

"But Laila knew that her future was no match for her brothers' past. They had overshadowed her in life. They would obliterate her in death. Mammy was now the curator of their lives' museum and she, Laila, a mere visitor. A receptacle for their myths. The parchment on which Mammy meant to ink their legends." ❤️?

"I used to worship you ... on Thursdays, I say for hours waiting for you ... I thought about you all the time. I used to pray that you'd live to be a hundred years old. I didn't know. I didn't know that you were ashamed of me... I don't want to hear from you. Ever... it ends here for you and me. Say your good-byes." ???

Perks of a TBR list that's not in order is choosing whichever one happens to call your name the loudest. Ending my night curled up under my #Ravenclaw blanket and settling in with #AThousandSplendidSuns. Excited to start my next reading adventure. ❤️📚

When She Woke: A Novel | Hillary Jordan

Pickpick

Only just nearing the end of Part One and my stomach is already in knots 😱 Growing up in the Bible Belt, the religious beliefs and culture in this book make it terrifyingly realistic. Especially in today's current political climate where the boundaries between church and state are often threatened. Two thumbs up from me so far 👍👍

When She Woke: A Novel | Hillary Jordan

"She felt panic rising, felt her throat constrict and her limbs begin to quiver. She shut her eyes and forced herself to lie still... Punishment was meted out in other ways: in increments of solitude, monotony and, harshest of all, self- reflection, both figurative and literal. She hadn't yet seen the mirrors, but she could feel them shimmering at the edges of her awareness, waiting to show her what she'd become."

Pickpick

I'm giving this a pick because of the way it makes you think about the future of technology and what could happen if it were to go too far. If it weren't for this factor, I'd probably give it a so-so because I felt it was much less exciting and climactic than I was expecting from it being called a thriller.

I don't think I could ever truly pick just one favorite book, but if I was forced to name just one title, this might be it

The Handmaid's Tale | Margaret Atwood

"The newspaper stories were like dreams to us, bad dreams dreamt by others. How awful, we would say, and they were, but they were awful without being believable. They were too melodramatic, they had a dimension that was not the dimension of our lives. We were the people who were not in the papers. We lived in the blank white spaces at the edges of print. It gave us more freedom. We lived in the gaps between the stories."

Loved the book, and looking forward to watching the Hulu series because if it's as good as it looks, I'll be a happy woman. It's message is still incredibly timely and relevant

I do see why a lot of people don't like this book because of the whole thing with Atticus displaying prejudice to the point where it sort of shattered their perception of his character. Personally, however, think it makes his actions in TKAM even MORE admirable because he didn't let his own prejudices or opinions get in the way of doing what he knew was the right thing and gave an innocent man an honest defense in the face of social backlash

What a happy coincidence this book/bookmark pairing is! Really enjoying it so far, especially how the lack of privacy and autonomy coupled with the outward appeal of the company gives you that eerie, unsettling feeling. My only thing is that the sex scenes just seem awkward and misplaced (especially Francis). Idk yet if it's just me, but if they had to cut something out of the movie, I know what I'd vote for #EmmaWatson #girlcrush #TheCircle
