So I got this as a "blind date" book from @bookculture . They compared it to the Miss Peregrine books and The Night Circus, both of which I enjoyed. This, not so much. The writing was bad, and I know it's already at a certain level of smut based on the content, but smut can be smut and still be well-written. The story had its moments, but ultimately it was very poorly done. Especially the ending. Think Mockingjay-type bad. Overall: Blegh.
So I didn't have wild expectations for this book (see what I did there?). I don't read many memoirs, and I haven't seen the movie. But I really enjoyed it. It's nice being in the headspace of someone who is doing something you know you'll never do and getting to "experience" it with them. And the writing was lovely. Overall, would recommend!
Watching the debate last night made my heart hurt. Maybe this will help.
"If edamame were sentient, do you think it would also be self-conscious about its body hair?" --Poet Sarah Jean Alexander before AJK came on.
Heading off to Adam Kurtz's book launch event at The Strand. On sale today!! And for the record, my milkshake brings more milkshakes. And maybe a little diabetes on the side.
Ok, so this book was a finalist for the Pulitzer, and was very well-written and provides a lot to ponder on. It's because it's so lauded that I can say with certainty that I just don't like short stories. Not for me. I get just far enough to become invested in a character, and then it's over. And I have to read another story just to be disappointed again for the same reason. Bah.
So this is a bit of an editor brag, but I just love this new journal. It comes out on Tuesday, and everything about it makes me happy. The content is friendly and insightful and hilarious and dark, and the author, Adam J. Kurtz, is the greatest. So happy that this will be out in the world soon!
This is from book one in the Raven's Shadow trilogy by Anthony Ryan. It feels like Game of Thrones, but it moves faster, has more outward magic, and has the incredible benefit of being complete and published. I love these books! #mapsinbooks #somethingforsept
YOU GUYS. I'm quite happy with this. I'm a Ravenclaw (naturally) so a bird makes sense. I'm sure a whole heap of you took this test today. What did you get? Are you happy about it?
Galley #1 of the day. I won this because I know an embarrassing amount of YA trivia, and I can raise my hand faster then the young people who probably care much more earnestly than I do. #sorrynotsorry #BKLovesLitsy
Spending the day at the Brooklyn Book Festival with @katedfisher and getting loads of swag. #BKLovesLitsy
So if I were able, I'd give this 3.5 stars. This is book two in a trilogy about what happens when the US military does the really stupid thing and makes vampires thinking they can be soldiers. Stupid Americans. These books have a Margaret Atwood-y flavor that I love, but man are they detailed. As in, I know the origin story for EVERYONE. That being said, I'll still definitely read book three 😉.
This is an easy #FunFridayPhoto. Clever funny vs laugh out loud funny, this book exists in a universe where fairy tale characters are real. Mary Mary and Detective Jack Spratt of the Nursery Crime Division are called to investigate the possible murder of Humpty Dumpty, known by all as a very nice egg who keeps to himself. And the truth is far more insane than you'd ever guess.
So one of the perks of working for PRH is that I get this sweet sweet reader app. I can download any PRH title for free. My bookshelf and my wallet are both relieved, but I find I read far fewer hard copy books anymore. I actually can't even remember the last physical book I've read. I feel like a print traitor. But who am I kidding...it's flippin awesome.
Shameless plug here. This book came out today, and I helped birth it into being. It's colorful and incredibly clever and far cooler than I am. A pleasure to work on and an even bigger pleasure to doodle in!
