The Book of Boy | Catherine Gilbert Murdock

So, interesting book! I am enjoying Murdock‘s use of language. Looking forward to where the story takes us.... #UCFBC19

DrSpalding It is interesting but I don‘t think it would be a choice of mine for LCs...you? 6y
Ehoffman That‘s what I am thinking as well.... 6y
CherylVDM I agree. It has a “Game of Thrones” meets the Catholic Church vibe going for me. 6y
DrSpalding Yes for sure! Liz did you go to any of the Roman Catholic churches when you were in Italy last year? @Ehoffman 6y
Ehoffman We went to sooo many churches and duomos. All incredibly beautiful! Our favorite was the duomo in Orvieto! 6y

Pickpick

What an intriguing and unsettling tale! This is not a genre that I would normally choose. Glad my lit group chose it and it's certainly worth the read. It was a challenge in the beginning to keep all the characters straight, but also worth hanging in there until familiarity sets in! #ucfprolc

I wonder if Sean truly saw his mother jump?? It's not clear yet. All the characters are so odd, the whole town it seems. Maybe from so many deaths in the Drowning Pool??? #ucflitprof

DrSpalding It is strange that these people want to live in a place that is known for a "drowning pool"! 8y
Mlittle The character development is so intriguing! Every chapter there is a new twist and turn so that I'm always wondering what is going on! Of course, why did the teacher and the student have to be having an affair? Why does it always turn up in some of these plots? Still can't figure out 7y
Ehoffman Agreed!! I also wonder what is going on with Helen?? She is slowly, but surely losing it?? 7y

The opening vignette makes sense now! Poor Libby and all the real women that suffered as the author described. This is not a genre that I would normally choose to read, but it is drawing me in! My confusion, early on with so many characters, has eased and am anxious to see where the story takes us!! #ucflitprof

CWalters I agree with all of your comments, Liz. I had to read ahead-- I wanted to read to the end. Can't believe the brilliance of the author to weave this all together. 8y
DrSpalding @cwalters This is what I thought about The Girl on the Train. I think I am a bit behind you all. Hopefully it will start to make more sense soon! 8y
CherylVDM The characters make my head spin. They are all so demented. Can't wait to read on. 8y
Mlittle I agree! Each one has more secrets than the other. The character development is complex and interesting. I also had to develop a character "cheat sheet"". Love the book! Litsy is fun too! 8y

#ucfproflc first several chapters I found myself flipping back and forth trying to keep characters straight , but starting to connect a bit now. I'm not liking the Mark Henderson character at all!!

CherylVDM Interesting and intriguing. The characters are quite dark. 8y
DrSpalding #ucfprofLC I agree. I took notes on all of characters! It can't be that we have met the killer in Mark Henderson. He's the teenage daughter's teacher and was one of the last to see the latest victim. I get the feeling that all if these characters that have loved ones that have succumb to the water, think they killed themselves. Strange!!! Looking forward to continuing the book! 8y
CherylVDM #ucfproflc What about the "slaughter" at Wards cottage? Is that where this all intersects? I get the sense that everything that has happened in Beckford began there. And why does Louise think that Nel's death will silence her? 8y

CWalters A friend cautioned me that I'd start getting lost in the large number of characters and would need to reread. Can't believe how early in the book it happened! Looking forward to reading further... 8y
twenzel Same here! Especially when only reading a few chapters at a time. This is one I could just spend a few hours digging into...will be hard to wait and follow our chapter assignments each week. 8y
anakenn I flipped back and forth quite a bit. I am very interested in the nervous swimming guy, Mark! What's his story??? 8y
DrSpalding @anakenn we are all wondering about him but I say, he's too obvious to be the killer. 8y
anakenn @DrSpalding I agree ...I just wonder what he's up to. Also...I only see this post. Are there others? 8y
DrSpalding @CherylVDM tell me more about Ward's cottage! Also, these deaths do have the police officer in common! 8y
CherylVDM @DrSpalding In the chapter with a different font - she is talking about the storytelling. She talks about Libby and then mentions a "slaughter" at Wards cottage. I'm wondering if that's what all the tragedies have in common. Maybe something they witnessed or even participated in???? 8y
CherylVDM @anakenn @twenzel @CWalters @DrSpalding I spent so much time flipping back and forth, I started putting post-it notes at the end of the chapter! 8y

“My love isn‘t divided,” she said. “It is multiplied.” Ch. 46 Luna to her mother as she leaves to be with Xan before she passes. I love this quote. The more people we love, the more love we have to give! ❤️

DrSpalding So true! 💜 8y

"Ideas, after all, are dangerous." Ch. 28 How many times throughout history has this thought been the cause of
oppression??? #Newbery2017

DrSpalding So true! The Protectorate isn't protecting, it is oppressing! 8y

Ch. 23 "Each lie they told fell from their lips and scattered on the ground, tinkling and glittering like broken glass."
Oh, I so love this author's use of language!!

LForsythe Same! I esp loved how she described the madwoman's transformation of sorrow to hope in ch. 16 (p.131): ...[sorrow] the merciless density of it, like a black while in her heart, swallowing the light.... 8y
DrSpalding The telling of lies to each other when they both knew it, was touching to me. She's at the end of her life and they both know it. I think once Luna turns 13, she will pass. 8y
Ehoffman Yes, I think much will be revealed/happen when she turns 13! 8y

Anyone else wondering who is narrating the brief chapters in italics?? And I love Glerk and his love of poetry!! A poetry-loving bog monster, who knew?? 😊#Newbery2017

LForsythe Wondering that, too-- and loving the layers it offers the story! 😊 8y
anakenn So I fought maybe it's Luna in the future. 8y
twenzel Ahh...hadn't thought of that! Now I want to reread those chapters... 8y

DrSpalding Glerk is a dragon correct? 8y
DrSpalding I reread some! Missed information the first go round. 8y
anakenn @DrSpalding Glerk is the swamp monster 8y
KarriW I think there is more to Glerk. See the quotes I posted. He referred to himself as the Bog, and he writes poetry. The person telling story in italics refers to Bog and Poet. 8y
sherronkr Do you think the Bog could be the Creator....? Of good and perceived evil? 8y
