Bailedbailed

Am I wrong to bail on this 50 pages in?

jeff Don't do it! It's a bit detailed in parts about how he MacGyvers his way out of trouble, but I really enjoyed the book overall. I would say give it a little more time. 9y
DrBird My rule is 70 pages before I bail. But I haven't read this so I can't properly encourage or discourage you! 9y
TheBelletrist I also had a hard time getting into this book, but after I got over all of the scientific mumbo-jumbo, it has become one of my favorite reads in quite awhile. I recommend you give another 50 pages a go :) I became unstuck around page 90 myself. 9y

TheWordJar Keep at it! The pace picks up after awhile. I felt bogged down in the beginning too, but it was worth sticking with in the end. 9y
TheSmallRiver Keep going. It starts slow but it picks up. I really enjoyed this book, I think I finished it in a few hours lol. 9y
suey I watched the movie first, so I wouldn't have picked up the paperback afterwards, but I rather enjoyed the audio book because I in some way knew the story and could listen to it while cleaning and doing my dishes without concentrating to hard 9y
BookNerd1975 Keep reading! The pace picks up and it is quite entertaining. 9y
whitney No! I say we should protest how much money we spend rescuing Matt Damon. 9y
ThatLibrarianLady If you don't like it print, try the audio. I loved it! 9y
Seattlejulie I loved this book! I do admit I skimmed some of the more technical details. Hang in there it's great! 9y
intothehallofbooks I agree with @ThatLibrarianLady-the audio was incredible! 9y
melissarochelle Don't give up! It's great. And like everyone else said, skimming over the super technical bits is totally acceptable. 9y
sparklemotion I had a tough time getting through it too, but the audiobook definitely helped. 9y
BlameMattBoyd Thanks everyone! I'll give it some more time! 9y
BucklingBookshelves I agree with everyone who recommended the audiobook -- I flew through this book in that format and it helped me not get bogged down in the technical stuff. 9y
molly I quit it after about 20 pages. I couldn't stand the blend of technical writing, lame prose, and sad attempts at humor. One of the few instances where I enjoyed the movie over the book. 9y
Janet I am one of two people I know who really didn't like this one. I like science, by the way. (Most people who hear I disliked it are like, "Oh, there's a lot of scientific language in there. It's not for everyone.") 9y
Barefoot I agree with the comments on the audiobook: it was lovely. But... I do know people who hated even that. 9y
Twirldori I quit around the same spot. The characters inner dialogue was ridiculous, and the technical bits were a bore. It made an incredible movie however. 9y
BlameMattBoyd Update: bailed. Life's too short to pretend you like a book. 9y
Chasingmermaids I wish I had. I ended up giving my copy to my brother and I think I had only gotten to 100 pages at most. 9y
JamesStuart Don't go any further. Check out Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy instead. 9y
Cmreed I bailed too! 9y
Leighanne I bailed but my engineer husband was enamoured 9y
Cinfhen The one time I enjoyed movie more than book 9y
Macnjen Wow, I really enjoyed both. The humor is throughout and the movie parallels pretty well. I really liked this, is recommend thing again. 9y
jharris28 I was riveted to The Martian from first page to last. The film was excellent but didn't convey the struggle to survive like the book. 9y
Polly It's never wrong to bail if you're not feeling it. 9y
Iira I loved this book so much, I laughed and cried and didn't want it to end, but no book is for everyone. 9y
Mfcallahan I loved this book. Kept stomping out to my husband saying "if he doesn't make it off this planet I don't know what I'll do!!!!" Still laughing when he realized his ahem social life might change significantly for the better if and when he made it back to Earth. 8y
Mike5824251 I'd keep going. Worth the initial struggle b 8y
