#IdiomInsight Day 15: There is a literal and metaphorical #UnderTheWeather vibe to this book that is grim, brooding, and grief-stricken. I love our first #EuropaCollective title. I have been abandoning novels left and right so I am glad to have finished reading this while reading three other novels I have been reading on and off for months now.

jlhammar So glad you loved it! Great description of the vibe. One of my favorite reads this year, for sure. 1y

Not only was Gene Kelly literally singing in the rain while spinning an umbrella and splashing through puddles, Kelly was sick with a 103 °F (39 °C) fever. He was definitely #undertheweather. 🤩 One of the most iconic dances on the movie screen of all time, and my favorite. If you want to revisit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swloMVFALXw

AnnCrystal 😮I never knew that, wow! 🕺💧 1y
dabbe @AnnCrystal I read about it a long time ago in a big book I had on MGM musicals. Amazing, isn't it? 😍 1y
MissyD 😱. I never knew that. I love old musicals 1y

AnnCrystal @dabbe no kidding...wow! Thanks for sharing 👍. (edited) 1y
Eggs He was a one-of-a-kind dancer. You just don‘t see that anymore ?☔️? Thanks for thé link ?? It‘s magic ✨ (edited) 1y
peaKnit Thank you, I just rewatched, what a talent. Have you ever seem Tom Holland‘s riff on this on Lip Sync Battle? I just love watching it and how it devolves into Umbrella by Rhianna. https://youtu.be/Brq-exSvB7Q?si=oJv2VtM-6gfSubEu (edited) 1y
dabbe @Eggs Agreed. He was the most athletic dancer I think I've ever seen. Kelly and Astaire. #nostalgia 🧡💜💛 1y
dabbe @peaknit Holy Moses, Batman! That. Was. STUNNING! 🤩🤩🤩

I have one more, too. This is Kurt Browning, #1 Canadian ice skater (back in the day) paying homage to Mr. Kelly:

#UnderTheWeather has its roots in maritime language. When a sailor became ill or seasick, often because of violent weather conditions, that sailor was sent below decks to the most stable part of the ship, which was under the weather rail. The phrase under the weather rail was shortened to the idiom under the weather.

The quote by Lucy on a ship is from this “Ten of the Best: Cases of Sea Sickness” article: https://shorturl.at/nPV07

rwmg Interesting. Whenever I've felt seasick I've always felt much worse in an enclosed space. 1y
DebinHawaii @rwmg Same! I thought the best way to ease it was to look at the horizon or something! 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1y

Origin: To be under the weather is to be unwell. This comes from a maritime source. In the old days, when a sailor was unwell, he was sent down below to help his recovery, under the deck and away from the weather.

Crabby feels a bit #UnderTheWeather . Plankton decides to play doctor and help Crabby. Using humor and dialogue, this #EasyReader will have readers giggling along with the story. Some of the words are in bold, which I assume means they are key words for young readers to recognize (doctor, bandage, etc.). I can totally see young readers loving this. #BBRC
