#readingoceania2024 #palau I read Shipwreck, Palau Discovered by Dr Paul Dale. It is about the wreck of the British packet Antelope and the mutual discovery of the people of Palau and Europeans. The crew befriended the natives and built a small ship to return to Macao. Unlike almost all the other initial Native/European interactions I have read- this was a meeting of fair minded, respectful humans who actually appreciated each other.

In 1848, Captain John Franklin & his crew went missing whilst searching for the Northwest Passage - a route between the Atlantic & the Pacific oceans deep within the Canadian Arctic. If you've ever read 'The Terror' by Dan Simmons, the book was based on that journey. In 2008 comedian & sometime actor, Billy Connolly, completed a 10-week voyage to the area for a TV series & this book is the resulting accompaniment. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf I rather enjoyed this. I've never seen the TV documentary series but if it was as entertaining as the book it must have been good viewing. Alongside his trademark humour, Connolly shows a great deal of understanding & respect for the Inuit culture, although I struggled with the parts about hunting seals etc, so I read those pages rather quickly. Otherwise it was an engaging & informative trip through the NP. 4🌟 (edited) 9mo

Was struggling to decide whether to DNF this or not. 1/3 through the book and it has no "spark" for me. I am interested in finding out about the tribes in India but this book does not seem to delve too deeply into it so will need to hunt for one that does.

Welcome! To "Behind the Scenes at the Library".

I'll be your hostess... Ana. And here is my desk... with stacks of Large Print standing orders (on the right), stacks of travel guides to the left (which have been on various forms of backorder status due to the pandemic), and stamp catalogs directly in front.

Oh, and plenty of BTS on my cubicle wall ?

Polish journalist Kapuściński lived and worked in various places in Africa for many years. Here, he chronicles a bit of history, some current events, and personal stories spanning from the 50s to the 90s. It‘s terrific.

#ReadingAfrica2022 Mauritania (also works for Ghana, Tanzania, Uganda, Zanzibar, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Sudan, Somalia, Senegal, Liberia, Cameroon, Mali, Eritrea)

BarbaraBB Thanks for bringing this book up. I have read and enjoyed other books by Kapuściński but hadn‘t heard of this one. I must get my hands on a copy! 3y
Librarybelle Oh! I‘ll have to keep this one in mind for sure! 3y
