Tomatoes for Neela | Padma Lakshmi

3.5 ⭐This is a wonderful book. It‘s meant more for about second grade than for reading nightly at bed. It is a little long, but it needs to be long for the purpose of the story. I really like how in the very end, not only does the author give her recipes for sauce and for chutney there‘s also information about tomatoes, information about farmworkers and a note from the author themselves. I can picture Padma in my head while I‘m waiting this.

LibrarianRyan Whether I picture her because the illustrator does a fantastic job or because of the words and having seen her for years on top Chef. I do think this book is uniquely her and it does work. Do I think she could be a frequent picture book writer… Depends. I would need to see more work to make a better opinion. 1w
mhillis I used this book as part of a discussion event on food culture with adult English language learners. The illustrations are beautiful aren‘t they? 1w
LibrarianRyan @mhillis that‘s cool. 1w

This was a fun gardening journey. I enjoyed it even if my garden only consists of a couple of raised beds and some pots.

SaceReads Stacked! I like to have plants but I do not consider myself a gardener. I don‘t have a lot of success unless it‘s an incredibly hardy plant that thrives on neglect. 10mo

Ahhhhh Saturday 😎

Larkken As someone who is very bad at growing tomatoes, that book looks interesting! 10mo

A fun and informative microhistory of the tomato, told in ten chapters. The author‘s tone is sometimes too jocular for my taste — “I‘m no historian. I‘m barely a writer.”— but audiobook narrator Paul Bellantoni provided enough gravitas to keep me listening.

The mere fungus of an offensive plant, which one cannot touch without an immediate application of soap & water with an infusion of eau de cologne to sweeten the hand, tomatoes, the twin brothers to soured & putrescent potato balls, deliver us, oh ye caterers of luxury, ye gods & goddesses of the science of cookery, deliver us from tomatoes.

A 2014 study found that between an astounding 1/4 to 1/3 of Americans‘ caloric, saturated fat and sodium intake was coming from pizza.

The gardeners must have been wistfully thinking, “Well, this silly citrus fad will die out with the king & these guys never last long.” The Sun King ruled for 72 years and 110 days, a record still waiting to be broken. Looking‘ at you, Queen E.

Dilara Louis XIV lived long for sure, but to be fair, he also became king at the age of 4, when his father died, which is not something we would wish on anyone, even Queen E 😋 2y
Lindy @Dilara May she rest in peace. (And good point about Louis XIV.) 2y

Such gorgeous illustrations!
The recipe makes me want to bite into a juicy heirloom tomato. This book has tomato fun facts, note on the importance of honouring the food we eat and the people who help bring it to us, the farmworkers. I‘m going to buy a copy for myself. 😊🍅

In this heartwarming tale about tradition and family, Neela and her mom prepare the family‘s tomato recipes. There is much discussion about tomatoes with recipes at the end. The hand drawn illustrations really add to the story. Letter T for #PictureBook #BBRC

I picked up a signed book of this gorgeously illustrated picture book on Black Friday at B&N (being a total Padma fan girl!) The story is beautiful, touching on themes of family and tradition, shared stories, seasonal and local food and the respect for the farmers hard work. A wonderful message, and a perfect accompaniment to Padma‘s fantastic Hulu series, ‘Taste the Nation‘. What I found most touching was….. ⬇️

KarenUK the memories of cooking with my own mother, mother-in-law and step-mother-in-law over the years. I treasure the recipes, and these moments so deeply. And can‘t wait to try the recipes! #booked2022 #pop22 #includesarecipe @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraBB @Megabooks @RaeLovesToRead @Kalalalatja @Cortg @Laughterhp 3y
