Invisible Man | Ralph Ellison

Pickpick

Debut novel about what it‘s like to grow up as a black man in mid-century America. Many experiences throughout show how blacks are treated just because they are black. Book should not be confused with H.G. Wells book where the invisible man is actually invisible. Race is what will keep this black man in his permanent underclass status thus denying him his humanity. It is a powerful read that should not be missed.

Time for the bookish discussion question of the day 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻! Here it is: I just finished setting up my library's #TheGreatAmericanReads display ☺️ (pics coming later today). What do you think of the selections chosen for the List of 100? http://bento.cdn.pbs.org/hostedbento-prod/filer_public/gar-phase-2/assets/tgar-b... #BookTalk

ReadingRuby That I haven‘t read enough of them! 7y
Melkyl I don‘t agree with some of the picks, and I feel there were some major omissions. For example, I think having both Twilight and The Hunger Games series is redundant. They are both YA series that had big followings. My pick as the big omission is that there is nothing by Ray Bradbury. 7y
PenguinInFlight I can‘t believe 50 Shades of Grey made it on there. I‘m a firm believer in “read what you like and screw everyone else‘s opinion”, though, so read on! 🤷🏻‍♀️ 7y

wanderinglynn I don‘t agree with some of them. Some were clearly picked based on sales. 7y
ReadZenRites I have to agree @PenguinInFlight and @wanderinglynn I don‘t think the Twilight series is best that genre has to offer. 7y
KikiLovesBooks They weren‘t chosen based on sales. This link has info on how they were chosen—through polls and an advisory panel. https://www.thirteen.org/blog-post/the-100-books-on-the-great-american-read-list... 7y
TongueTiedSLP11 Some I agree with and some I‘m not so sure about, simply because it‘s not my particular taste (e.g. Fifty Shades, Twilight). However, I can‘t deny that all of them have made an impact on modern literature for better or worse. 7y
Leftcoastzen They put an emphasis on Best loved American books not necessarily the best books in literary merit. But there are some ones that will stand the test of time for sure. 7y
Melissa_J I‘d like to know why it‘s called the Great American Read when so many of the books on the list aren‘t even American? I would have thought the list would be composed entirely of American-authored books. 7y
Jennifer3 I like them even if some aren‘t to my taste. I think many of them were chosen for their influence on us as American readers. 7y
alisiakae @Melissa_J The selections are supposed to be Americans favorite books, not necessarily just American authors. 7y
Melissa_J @4thhouseontheleft I get that, but I still don‘t think the name fits, as it still suggests to me an American book. If something was titled Great British Read or Great Canadian Read I wouldn‘t expect anything but books authored by Brits or Canucks. Of course, I have no actual suggestions for how it could be changed 🤣 7y
Lcsmcat I think it‘s a very uneven list. I‘ve read 50 of them, including some that I don‘t think deserve to be on there. But I hope it will inspire more people to read. 7y
britt_brooke I definitely think the wrong #Vonnegut made the list. It would make way more sense to see Slaughterhouse-Five or even Cat‘s Cradle than Sirens of Titan, IMO. 7y
