An incredible book that explains the threat posed by political extremism especially from the far right on liberal democracies.
In the age of information, social media is fomenting and radicalizing lone wolf domestic terrorists easier than generations ago. This book eloquently lays out the threat from groups spawned by extremist ideologies and how nations can battle against them.

V13: Chronicle of a Trial | Emmanuel Carrere
post image

I knew, we knew, that what we were experiencing was anything but the grand historical event, the vain, colossal judicial spectacle that we all had good reason to fear at the beginning. No: this was something else: a unique experience of horror, pity, proximity and presence. It was only very late in the day that I realised that the white box resembles a modern church, and that something sacred had been taking place there.

charl08 Definitely recommended, thoughtful look at a difficult process (not least because almost all of those who directly killed people, died before they could be brought to trial). I'm full of flu at the moment and not at my most coherent for reviewing. Tagging @kspenmoll who has posted a "proper review". 1mo
charl08 @Suet624 @BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain should have tagged you all in the comment, sorry! 🫠 1mo
BarbaraBB Thanks. You‘ve convinced me. And I have loved all the books I read by Carrère 1mo
charl08 @BarbaraBB any recs? I'd not read anything else by him. 1mo
BarbaraBB Another true crime one I enjoyed (though that‘s not the best way to describe it) is 1mo
BarbaraBB This is one about cancer, very saddening but so well written 1mo
BarbaraBB And I also loved this very scary one 1mo
charl08 @BarbaraBB thank you! Will see what I can get hold of. 1mo

Just wanted to take a moment to say our hearts go out to everyone in the L.A area tonight. Australia has seen more than its fair share of devastating fires so we understand exactly what you are all going through. Though we are currently in our fire season, we‘ve been fortunate to have a La Niña weather system which has brought much rain thank god. We hope the weather gods smile on you too soon. Be safe, evacuate. ❤️?❤️

maich I just heard the news about it on tv. Sending love prayers and hope🙏🙏🙏 1mo
LeeRHarry Have been thinking about LA this week , have friends living there and know of people who have lost their home - all very stressful. Thanks for posting Liz 💕 1mo

Rather than quote the entire book, I chose certain excerpts as a snapshot. Paired with You Will Not Have My Hate by Antoine Leiris,( which I reviewed years ago here), this book is a vivid, heartfelt, disturbing, gut wrenching, & heartbreaking tale of the terrorists attack in 2015 in Paris. In light of the revolution dethroning Bashar al-Assad, this reporting of the trial, its victims & its perpetrators, is a relevant & necessary read.

BarbaraBB I love Carrère and you‘re right about the relevance of the book so I‘ll be stacking. 2mo

This is an earlier book by this Aussie author. I've now read several of his books. As with his others he takes events/ situations and using fiction spins a story that makes you think.
"5 days,3 unexploded bombs, and every truth of your life turned into a lie. What would you do?"

Jeg I see from a previous post this has been on my TBR shelf for at least 5 years! 4mo

This book was incredibly well written, but sad and hard to get through. Read it for a book club but I think I‘m going to skip the discussion. With another anniversary coming up this week I‘m just glad I don‘t have to go into DC that day and my kids will be close by.

Starting this month‘s book club book. When they pick books like this it‘s very apparent that I am the oldest by 10 years. Not really something I enjoy reading about- I lived it.

Erinreadsthebooks Interested to hear how you like it. Looks like a good read, tough but good. 6mo
