The Peacock Room Comes to America | Freer Gallery of Art, Lee Stephens Glazer
post image

Thursday, @dsfisher and I started at the Freer/Sackler Galleries. As I mentioned earlier, we learned our lesson and had all our book purchases, except the tagged one shipped home. They should arrive Monday. 😊 After Freer/Sackler, we walked around the Sculpture Gardens (no books) and then went to the National Portrait Gallery, which has a phenomenal Votes for Women exhibit! #vacationshopping #bookhaul #daysix #shopone #shoptwo

Wednesday was our first full day in D.C. and we started with a walk from the Hay Adams Hotel, past the White House, to the National Museum of African American History and Culture. It is an amazing museum - 7 floors of very moving exhibits. These are the books we got in the gift shop. #vacationshopping #bookhaul #dayfive #shopone I wanted a book on Emmitt Till, but neither of the two in the shop appealed to me, so I will have to go hunting locally.

Jee_HookedOnBookz Love your picks! 6y
litenthusiast We are planning to go to the African American history museum in June. I'm glad you liked it, I'm really looking forward to seeing the exhibits. 6y
DGRachel @litenthusiast It was amazing. I cried at least three times while walking through the lower levels (slavery through civil rights movement). Most of my photos didn‘t turn out because of the dim lighting, but that‘s why I got the official guidebook. Just take tissues. 6y
DGRachel @litenthusiast One more thing! Even though the museum is free, they have timed tickets to keep it from getting too crowded, so be sure to decide in advance which day you want to go and go online to get tickets. @BarbaraBB I don‘t know if they‘ll still be doing ticketing in August, but just something to think of. This is the only Smithsonian museum that needs advanced tickets. 6y

Tuesday was traveling day from Gettysburg to D.C. One of our last stops was the Jenny Wade House, where we made our last book purchase in Gettysburg. Ironically, despite being called the Jenny Wade House, Jenny didn‘t actually live here. She was helping to take care of her sister when she was killed by a Confederate bullet. #vacationshopping #bookhaul #jennywade #dayfour #shopone

#vacationshopping #daythree #shopone I just realized I didn‘t buy books on our first full day in Gettysburg. That was the day my aunt bought my second hand Folio Society collection! I‘ll let @dsfisher post her books from that shop. These are the ones we bought at the Gettysburg Visitor Center on Monday. The Cyclorama was Ah-May-Zing!!!! Oh, and we met the author of The Little Bugler and had his book signed. 😊

LeahBergen I have The Little Bugler! 👏🏻 6y
Kaye Looks like you found lots of interesting books. Neat photo done in the old fashioned colors too. 6y
Mariposa_Bookworm How awesome! You are close to me in Frederick, Maryland! 6y

Aimeesue The Cyclorama IS amazing! I wish I'd seen the one in Atlanta when we lived near there. Missed opportunities, sigh. 6y
DGRachel @Mariposa_Bookworm I didn‘t realize you‘d moved! We drove through Frederick on our way to DC and drove past the house where my mom grew up. 6y
Suet624 I lived in Gettysburg a very long time ago. Spent a lot of time in the woods where the tourists didn't go. It is a deeply beautiful and very disturbing place. 6y
CoverToCoverGirl Amazing.. I‘ve been and they don‘t call it “ hallowed ground “ for nothing! It‘s like stepping back in time. It‘s like you can sense what occurred there. 😔 6y

7 days of vacation split between Gettysburg and Washington D. C. means five days of bookstores! I will try to spread out my posts for you. 😉 I grabbed these at For the Historian in downtown #Gettysburg. #daytwo #shopone

LeahBergen Ohhhh! Gettysburg is on my bucket list! 👏🏻👏🏻 6y
Theaelizabet @LeahBergen Mine, too! (edited) 6y
AlaMich Did you bring an extra suitcase? 😉 6y

GingerAntics 💙💙💙 6y
DGRachel @AlaMich No, that would have been smart. Instead, we bought tote bags at nearly every stop and actually had our books from the Freer Gallery shipped home. 🤣🤣 6y
DGRachel @LeahBergen @Theaelizabet It was my second trip to Gettysburg, but being older, I definitely appreciated it more. The weather was cold and rainy, but the museum in the main visitors center was incredible. 6y
Hoopiefoot That Guelzo book is fantastic. Enjoy! 6y
Graciouswarriorprincess @DGRachel Make sure you visit busboys and poets. Part bookstore and cafe. Also Kramer books in DC. I miss home. 6y
DGRachel @Graciouswarriorprincess Sadly with such little time in DC by the time we finished the museums during the day and had dinner, mom and I were too exhausted to go back out, so we never made it to Kramer. Maybe next time 🤞🏻 6y
Graciouswarriorprincess @DGRachel. Definitely! They have a cafe with food and drinks at Kramer so you should visit next time. 6y
saguarosally I‘ve done two DC bookstore vacations so far. Hoping for a third soon enough! 6y
