GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit I‘ve been posting kind of sporadically lately. I‘ll post like 10 things rapid fire, then not post anything for a week, so it‘s easy to skip a few hours of Litsy and totally miss that I‘m still around. lol How are you doing? 5y

GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit I teach seniors at a collegiate high school, so technically they are also college sophomores. 5y

GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit sometimes yes, sometimes no. We talk about how over worked/stressed this age group is and this program really takes that to the extreme in my opinion. My longevity in this program is limited because I‘m not sure I can ethically continue to add to their workload. It‘s a charter school and as part of the charter they must write this big research project solving a “problem” in their community. I teach the class helping them do that. (edited) 5y

GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit I occasionally teach the class the juniors/freshman take teaching then how to conduct research. The fun part is that we never know what or if we‘re teaching from one semester to the next until just before it starts, so it‘s also not stable. 5y

Chrissyreadit Hmmm- could that be the problem they solve? We have so much research to support how we learn and adolescent development? Our culture is killing me! My kids stink at test taking because they think about all of the answers and are slow and meticulous. I wonder if I did a disservice not teaching them to take tests yet they are considered excellent students in dual enrollment- There are so many struggles in our system it‘s hard to take them on. 5y

GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit those test mean nothing in the end. They don‘t help them in college. Honestly, if they‘re already doing duel credit, I‘d say opt them out. The tests are probably just hindering them at this point, from the sounds of it. (edited) 5y

GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit My students probably could do this as a capstone, but they would probably get in trouble for arguing against the school, or just be told outright the topic doesn‘t work. We‘ve been talking about it in class and several are wishing they‘d chosen it. They‘re being so constrained in their research by having to conduct research in this one way. 5y

GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit As a teacher I don‘t even know what all the assignments are. When I ask, I‘m told not to worry about it. I‘ve got kids asking, trying to plan ahead. I‘m just so frustrated. The second half of this semester has turned into busy work with little of value. 5y

Chrissyreadit You‘re in a tough position. I had to leave teaching because it was not worth the stress. You really might find a niche teaching or programming for homeschoolers. (edited) 5y

GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit you‘re not the first person to suggest that. I just haven‘t been able to figure out how to get into that. We‘re moving in June, so it might be a good time to figure out. 5y

GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit wow, everything I found readily on google was catholic and all about rigorous education in godliness and academics. That is the opposite direction I was going for. I swear, if I were independently wealthy, I‘d start a democratic school. 5y

Chrissyreadit Ugh! There is secular homeschool- I was very active in an online group Secular Eclectic Academic homeschoolers. Secular is just not as big as Christian at the moment. But it‘s not small either. That‘s one of the reasons I‘m encouraging you- there is a need for secular sources and services. 5y

Chrissyreadit Possibly- there are several hubs for online programs, I just can‘t remember them but if you google secular homeschool stuffs should pop up. 5y

Chrissyreadit I know we would have loved a language arts NaNoWriMo styled class, or debate, topics that are more challenging to put together. Or you could look into creating curriculum- I would look at the common ones to see what‘s missing- like Oak Meadow and Build Your Library. My brain is fried right now but there are others- you may find a niche type job - I taught history using books on Royal Fireworks Press that we‘re excellent- immersive into topics like 5y

Chrissyreadit Yellow Journalism, ecology- the series is under Problem Based Learning and I suspect you would enjoy it. 5y

GingerAntics Oh I would have loved a NaNo style class as a kid! I wish I had known there was a national novel writing month when I was little. 5y
