Evidence of the Affair | Taylor Jenkins Reid

Thanks to @KarenUK for putting this on my #readersradar last night. (And for the #pop23 prompt! 😁) Set in the 1970s, a doctor‘s wife discovers her husband‘s affair and starts writing to the other woman‘s husband, and we also see letters between the doctor and his paramour.

It‘s only a short story / novella but still packs a punch and there‘s room for a bit of a twist too.

KarenUK Glad you enjoyed it…. And after reading this, I just found out from one of my booksellers that all her books are set in the same ‘universe‘! Apparently there‘s an overlap of a character in every book…. (In this one she mentions a Daisy Jones LP) 2y
CBee Yay for 70s babies 🙌🏻🙌🏻 2y

squirrelbrain @KarenUK - I noticed the Daisy reference. Mick Riva was also mentioned, who was in both of the other 2 TJR books that I‘ve read.(Evelyn Hugo and Malibu Rising). 2y
OriginalCyn620 On my tbr! 2y
Ruthiella I‘ve only read Daisy Jones by TJR and I didn‘t really like it. I need to give another book from her a chance. Maybe Evelyn Hugo? 🤔 (edited) 2y
squirrelbrain Yes, I would say Evelyn Hugo is the best one I‘ve read of hers @Ruthiella 2y
Cortg @Ruthiella I loved Evelyn Hugo! My favorite by her as well. 2y
Cortg I wasn‘t aware of this title, I‘ll have to check it out! 2y

An epistolary novella, set in the seventies….. A wife of a doctor discovers the evidence of the title. As she connects with the wronged husband on the other end of the affair, a friendship forms. Told through letters between both couples, it‘s a fairly straightforward story, but the ending has a satisfying conclusion.

While most of this book left me feeling dizzy and astonished, I never for a moment felt it untrue. Karr writes with such clarity & honesty that EVERY CRAZY MOMENT seemed 100% authentic. A mixture of sadness and hilarity. A true storyteller. My biggest gripe, the jump from 1963 right into 1980. And I wanted more PHOTOS!!! I realize her follow up memoir, CHERRY must be those in between years. #setinthedecadeyouwereborn #pop18

Crazeedi Thanks, I've not seen this one before, added! 6y
Cinfhen It‘s really over the top @Crazeedi but totally believable unlike a different memoir which felt intentionally outlandish and I HATED it 6y
cajunsyd I read this a long time ago and it was one of those books that stayed with me... 6y

It took me a while to get into this book, but once I did, I was hooked. This is a story, set in the 70s, that explores family dynamics, and the aftermath of a family tragedy.

Reading this brought me to a lot of self-reflection over the way I parent my daughter. Marilyn‘s drive to give her eldest daughter what she herself desired, at the sacrifice of Lydia‘s true wishes, reminds me of the tap dance I have done to try not to do that as a mother.

alisiakae This could easily fit #POCAuthor for #Booked2018, but I am holding that spot for Homegoing. It is my selection for #popsugar #setinthedecadeyouwereborn (just barely, I was born at the very, very end of the 70s), and #LitsyAtoZ. #pop18 (edited) 7y
Tamra Listening to this today. I agree about it being slow going - waiting for it to pick up. 7y
alisiakae To be fair to Marilyn, Lydia went along with her Mom‘s plans for most of her life without complaint. But I was aghast at how unequally Marilyn and James treated their kids. 7y
alisiakae @Tamra I rated it 3.5 stars on GR. It felt very much like a first novel, but I‘m still looking forward to reading 7y
2BR02B I loved this novel. It was even better on the second read. 7y
