4.5 ⭐Once again, this man hits it out of the park. I wish he would write more children‘s books. He has such a creative mind and such a way with words. In this book, our character gets a new teacher. The new teacher is kind of gruff and our main character goes into some pretty crazy stories. But how much is true how much is not? Weird Al can tell a story, whether he‘s rhyming them to polka music or putting them in a book, this man makes words

LibrarianRyan that adult and children want to listen to. And when you read his books, they sound like him. I love that about his writing about this book and his other one. Please Weird Al write more books. 14h

When I Grow Up | Al Yankovic

4.5 ⭐ I love this book when it first came out. I still love it now. It‘s weird Al so you know his cadence and his storytelling is on point the story itself while some may consider long. It flows so well that while it‘s as wordy as an Eminem song, it goes as fast as a word page. Weird Al is able to weave magic in these pages. And the ending makes my heart go pitter patter my eyes tear up and make me go.

LibrarianRyan Let‘s not forget about our illustrator Wes HARGIS. They have created the perfect illustrations to go with this book. A little in line a little watercolor, but a whole lot of fun. 15h

The World Needs More Purple Schools | Kristen Bell, Benjamin Hart
Pickpick

3.5 ⭐Once again this book feels like Kristen Bell. It has the same message as the “The World Needs More Purple People”. That message is to be who you are but to also listen and look after others. To ask questions to be respectful and give others as much time as you want for yourself. That everybody is equal because they are a person. I love the message of this book and the ideas behind it.

LibrarianRyan I do think this book is shorter than the first one and would be a fantastic read for any classroom.

The Wave | Todd Strasser

From the back cover:
“…As they study WWII, Ben Ross‘s students can‘t seem to understand how the German people could have followed Hitler and the Nazis. So Mr. Ross created an experimental movement called The Wave. What begins in a single classroom quickly gathers momentum. Before the end of the week, The Wave‘s motto, “Strength Through Discipline, Strength Through Community, Strength Through Action,” governs the entire school…”

A really beautiful story about finding strength in our weaknesses. As someone who struggled with math and had similar unhealthy/unhelpful coping mechanisms to Ally, this was very poignant for me. I loved the characters and their relationships. The friendships were organic and real. Mr. Daniels might be my new favorite fictional teacher. So much emotion packed into such a short book. I absolutely loved it.

This was my #BookSpin for January.

So Much to Tell You | John Marsden
post image
Pickpick

I‘m processing my sadness over the passing of John Marsden by revisiting his brilliant books, starting with his debut.

I remember my grade 5 teacher reading this to the class and I‘ve read it several times since. Even though I know what happens I‘m still completely absorbed.

I‘ve gotten something a little different from it each time.

Butterfinger I don't think I know him. I have to look him up. I bet you feel the same way I did when Gary Paulsen died. 3w
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Butterfinger, he‘s best known for the Tomorrow, When The War Began series. I‘m not sure if he‘s super well known outside of Australia beyond that. He was a brilliant storyteller (mostly writing MG & YA but he branched into adult fiction and NF in more recent years) and passionate educator - he founded his own primary school in regional Victoria. (edited) 3w
Butterfinger No, I have read him. The group of teens who were in the Outback when their town was taken. Yes, I read the first one for a challenge and continued the season 3w

Butterfinger The series. It was so good. 3w
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Butterfinger, not the outback but you are thinking of the right series. I read them as a teen and just flew through them. There‘s a follow up trilogy called The Ellie Chronicles which was also excellent. (edited) 3w
willaful his most memorable for me. 3w
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @willaful, that one is on my tbr stack! I‘m sure I‘ve read it but it‘s been awhile! (edited) 3w
Rissreadswithcats Let me know when you are going to read I can‘t remember if I‘ve read it or not. 3w
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Rissreadswithcats, I‘ve got the ebook so I‘m ready at any time… do you have a copy? 3w
Rissreadswithcats I have one in my school library and I‘m back on the 23rd. Ok to wait until then? 3w
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Rissreadswithcats - I‘m going to set up a buddy read for it - no stress if you haven‘t got the book yet. EDIT : I can‘t add you to a StoryGraph buddy read because we aren‘t StoryGraph friends 🥹 (I‘m SharniBee on there) (edited) 1w
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Rissreadswithcats, I still can‘t add you to a buddy read - it might be your community settings for buddy read invites? 1w
Rissreadswithcats Strange as I joined the book chain. I‘ll have a look today 1w
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Rissreadswithcats, I‘m doing the book chain too. Probably slightly different way of joining. If it‘s easier, you can add me to a buddy read - my buddy read invites is set to anybody. 1w

The Labors of Hercules Beal | Gary D. Schmidt
post image
Pickpick

I really enjoyed this contemporary MG novel about a boy running a family greenhouse with his older brother after the death of their parents. His teacher assigns a project in which he must relate events & tasks in his own life to the 12 labors of Hercules. There‘s a lot of mythological information and an amazing setting on Cape Cod alongside a story of the importance of found family (including pets) and community connection.
