The best way to overcome [the fear of death]—so it seems to me— is to make your interest gradually wider and more impersonal, until bit by bit the walls of the ego recede, and your life becomes increasingly merged in the universal life. An individual human existence should be like a river— small at first, nearly contained within its banks, and rushing passionately past boulders and over waterfalls. Gradually the river grows wider, the banks ⬇️

JenniferEgnor recede, the water flows more quietly, and in the end, without any visible break, they become merged in the sea, and painlessly lose their individual being. The man who, in old age, can see his life in this way, will not suffer from the fear of death, since the things he cares for will continue. And if, with the decay of vitality, weariness increases, the thought of rest would not be unwelcome. —Bertrand Russell (edited) 1d

Marcus Aurelius was among those who offered another way to come to grips with a prospective of nonbeing: the period after death, he pointed out, is like the period before birth. You didn‘t spend the billions of years before you were born in a state of anxiety and apprehension, because there was no “you” to be aware of anything. Looking back now, it doesn‘t seem frightening that there was once a time when you were not conscious. Why then ⬇️

JenniferEgnor should you be concerned about returning to that nonexistent, nonconscious state when you die? 2d

If death marks a permanent end of your consciousness, then from your point of view when you die, the entire future of the universe (running into tens of billions of years or more) must telescope down not just into a night, as Socrates described, but into a fleeting instant. Even if the universe were to go through other cycles of expansion and contraction, then all of these cycles as far as you are concerned would happen in zero time. What ⬇️

“He thought of Heraclitus: a man cannot step in the same river twice, for it is not the same river, and he is not the same man.”

This is another one of those woo woo past lives books, so I don‘t have much to say about it that can‘t be found in another Michael Newton style book. I do find the whole topic rather fascinating. I think it‘s one of few theories or phenomena that adequately address why you are you right now having this experience and not someone else in a different body having a different experience in a different time and place. For me, it‘s a central mystery.

In 2013, my mom recommend me to read this book after I finish reading Fifty Shades of Grey. What an incredible book and many years ago, my mom told me that she met the author of this book.

I don‘t know about this one. Even though this wasn‘t a super long book, I just felt like it drug on for forever. I honestly kept hanging on for Angel because I loved his character. It game Big Fish vibes at first, but then just fell flat for me. Cool concept. Some interesting things, but overall, I didn‘t love this one.

Eugene claims to have lived several past lives, from Spain and Italy to Oregon and California, and even spent time as a cat in Chelsea. This is a very intriguing story, and I can‘t wait to see #whereintheworld it goes next.
