Casually readable biography of a famous prostitute. I don‘t know if there are grand revelations here, but it‘s a chance to focus on someone whose story isn‘t told in such detail very often.

A very good but disturbing story about a girl from Nepal forced into the sex trade in India.

This was often a tough book to read, about a 13 year old Nepali girl sold into prostitution in India. McCormick does an amazing job of describing how horribly Lakshmi is treated while also refraining from being excessively explicit. Lakshmi faces these circumstances with her mother‘s words that to endure is to triumph and never fully gives up hope.

vonnie862 I was about to borrow this book but the topic is too dark for me right now. 7mo
Daisey @vonnie862 I completely understand. Knowing it would be a fairly short read, I read just a few chapters each evening, but I never wanted to read along section at a time. 7mo
TheBookHippie Amazing read. Gets banned constantly. I always buy copies when I see them. 7mo

I just realised I didn‘t post my review of this book that I read last September whilst in Egypt. I know I really enjoyed it but I can‘t think of much to say about it now. That‘s the problem when too much time passes and too many more books! I will say that I think the author had too much to say about women‘s vaginas. He is obsessed with them. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

MariaW Have had this one on my bookshelf for forever. 🙈 8mo
mcctrish I read this ages ago and I loved it 8mo

Shy, socially awkward Marie chronicles her use of sex, writing, and the internet to connect with others and overcome her social deficits, with mixed results.

People who think she's a bad writer sound like they're regurgitating Truman Capote's dumb comment about Kerouac's On the Road: “That's not writing, that's typing.“

Good luck getting ahold of this gem of a book, though.

The tenth most banned book in America this past year is a skillfully and sensitively told story, based on interviews with real survivors, of a 13 year old Nepali girl sold by her stepfather into prostitution in India. This important, inspiring, and very moving book, published in 2006 to critical acclaim, exemplifies the words Lakshmi‘s beloved mother tells her, “Simply to endure…is to triumph,” and celebrates survival, love of learning, and hope.

I‘m just a little over halfway thru this doorstop and I‘ve nearly bailed because it doesn‘t always keep my interest (seems a bit repetitive). Do I hang in there???

xicanti I read it a looooong time ago and have forgotten basically everything except that I found the ending weak. It does that litfic thing where it just STOPS. If you don‘t love it, I figure you‘re good to bail. 1y
Soubhiville I really liked this book, even the end. It‘s definitely a looooong haul though. 1y
Ruthiella I didn‘t love this like everyone else did. My sister raved about it and I read her copy. For me it dragged a lot. I much prefer by him the very creepy 1y

Jess_Read_This Permission to bail, granted! I think there are too many other potential gems waiting for you. No need to force thru this one. 😆 1y
CarolynM I bailed at the 100 page mark. I just don‘t like that cod Victorian writing style. 1y
LeahBergen Meh. I‘d bail. I loved it when I read it ages ago but I remember loving it all the way through. It‘s probably just not your jam! 1y
Hooked_on_books I totally say bail. I think in the end you‘ll be glad you did. 1y
Cathythoughts I did love it. But , I‘m a great believer in the bail. There are so many books to read. I say bail ! Then onwards and upwards 👍🏻♥️ 1y
youneverarrived This is one of my favourites but if you‘re not enjoying it at halfway I‘d say bail 1y
Tamra @xicanti @Soubhiville @Ruthiella @Jess_Read_This @CarolynM @LeahBergen @Hooked_on_books @Cathythoughts @youneverarrived thanks for the input! I decided to rehome it. Had it been shorter I may have pushed through. I‘m on to my next bedtime chunkster, which I‘m absolutely loving. 1y
