This is the darkest of the series so far, but still beautifully written. 4⭐️ because I didn‘t enjoy it but appreciate the story none the less.

"When I'm fighting to live, I think to myself: what a story to tell my sister. I will be her favourite story. I will be the greatest story she ever heard."
It's crying-about-siblings o'clock in these parts
“Fish“ was in my current read, hooray. Don't know where I'm gonna find “Portugese“, though. Cruising Libby now...

This is a very fun read. I loved how Rae embraced her villainous character. It irritated me how she kept believing (or trying to convince herself) that things would happen the way she half-remembered them going in the book, even though her very presence in the plot massively changed things. The ending was a great twist! I think book 2 comes out soon and I‘ll definitely be reading it, but I‘m not running out to buy it.
Okay, did anybody else feel like they read half a book?
I'm used to a fairly handy feature of this series of novels/novellas being time jumps, but there was something that felt particularly rote about this entry's skipping along the plot beats. There were certainly aspects of the world hinted at that I'd like to know a lot more of, there seems to be the regular hint of something sinister that might lead to discontent with the formerly 1/?
I love the Wayward Children series so much, and this latest book didn‘t disappoint. I ached over Nadya‘s our-world story and loved her underwater portal world (and ached again over the ending). I‘m constantly impressed by how deftly McGuire weaves into her fantasy worlds huge topics like adoption and ableism, in ways that illuminate and universalize the experiences of diverse characters.
This was my 2025 pick for #192025.
Overall, I liked this installment of the Wayward Children. In this one we get to explore the other school for children who have entered mysterious doors. The one thing I didn‘t love was the body shaming, it just felt unnecessary for the plot. 4⭐️
Saffron is back dealing w/ high school bullies, Gwen is drawn deeper into political intrigues & world ending magic, & Yena is learning that not everything is as it seems. It will take everyone working together to save the world.
This blew away all my expectations for this sequel! Much more expansive world building, & a thoroughly satisfying resolution! Threads enough for more, & some sweet romances that don‘t overpower the rest of the story.
