Afterlife | Julia Alvarez
post image
Pickpick

I picked this up at #pla2020 last week in Nashville and tore right through it. Alvarez is ana amazing writer, and my only complaint is that the book is too short. Antonia is a recently retired professor, whose beloved husband has also recently passed away. Two other life-changing events occur in the course of the book, making Antonia question her own humanity. I particularly love the descriptions of The Sisterhood. Great, quick read!

gossamerchild Thanks to #algonquinbooks for the #free book! 5y
iread2much Looks like a good read! How old is the main character? 5y
gossamerchild @iread2much mid-60s, I think. 5y

Well, I made it to the Parnassus Books… in the Airport! #pla2020

Chrissyreadit What a fun place to find at the airport! 5y
TimSpalding @Chrissyreadit Actually, it's a pretty great bookstore, for an airport bookstore. Pretty full of books. Good selection. A few enjoyable thingies, but not taken over by them. 5y
Kaylamburson Did you get to go to the original one? It was very sweet. They had a mini door to get to the kids' section! 5y

Reading Robert of Clari‘s account of the wonders of Constantinople at the Sun Diner in Nashville after #pla2020. Robert was a very low-ranking knight during the Fourth Crusade, which sacked Constantinople in 1204. The sack was a desecration. It wrecked the city, installed a brief “Latin” empire, and made the eventual destruction at the hands of the Turks inevitable. Robert saw none of the politics, but his account is amazing for what it did see.

TimSpalding There are long sections on the wonders of Constantinople. I can picture in my mind what he‘d write about the wonders of Nashville and its honkey-tonks. 5y

Before She Was Helen | Caroline B. Cooney
post image

Starstruck and so excited to meet Caroline B. Cooney this morning as I adored all her MG fiction from THE FACE ON THE MILK CARTON to THE TERRORIST! I got a signed copy of her first adult novel in 40 years! Thanks so much, @sourcebooks and #PLA2020! Makes me wish I could go back to the days of browsing Borders for her next book.

inthegreensandblues Browsing Borders! 😿 5y
Kimberlone Omg The Face on the Milk Cartón was seriously one of my favorite books when I was a kid. I read the whole series! So cool you got to meet her! 5y
Kaylamburson I know, I want Borders back! 😢 @inthegreensandblues 5y

Kaylamburson Yes!! I think I read that one first and then bought all of her books. I remember in school telling teachers she was my favorite author. It was an incredible moment to meet her! @Kimberlone 5y

Another #pla2020 book—another book I‘d gladly have paid for, but they just gave me. (I‘m very picky about my conference books and never more so than when everything needs to go to New Zealand in my baggage!) A dual bio of elder and younger. Looks great.

Kaylamburson It was so wonderful meeting you in person today, @TimSpalding ! 5y
TimSpalding @Kaylamburson hello in virtual life! Nice to meet you in real. 5y
